I played everything on Very High at 1600x1200, but I don't think that was a major contributing factor in my belief that Crysis is one of the best games of the year. While it looks amazing, it plays amazing as well.
The AI is astounding - the best since F.E.A.R - and it facilitates a large style of approaches. You can play the game as a stealther or as a run n gunner, and the AI will facilitate it in the way you would expect it to. If you go Rambo style, they flank, use grenades, advance and retreat and generally give you some fantastic firefights.
If you go all guerilla on them, they patrol, search, panic and poop their little girly panties. Just like you'd expect.
The game also has a shifting scenario - something that almost no FPS games besides HL2 and Escape From Butcher Bay have ever managed to pull off. Even the very best games stagnate, because you're just doing the same thing over and over. In Crysis, things don't have the opportunity to stagnate. Just as you start getting used to the jungle environment, you're floating around in zero G. Before you can say W T F you're in a xenoformed jungle and everything gets crazy. Stuff like that keeps games fresh, and after playing generic_run_n_gun_01 for years, it's a breath of fresh air to play a game that realises that FPS games need things mixing up now and then.
The game also has some amazing set pieces. The opening of the level Assault impressed me more than just about anything I've seen since Call of Duty 2. The game also does an amazing job of making the player feel like he is not a one man army, but that he is the elite technological speartip of an actual army. I hate feeling like some invincible supersoldier because I can carry 10 healthpacks or something. Having a supersuit might not be much less of a contrivance, but it feels much better to me. And occasionally interacting with other soldiers really, really makes me feel like there is a full blown skirmish waging on the island, and that I'm just a cog in the machine - a particularly important cog, but what do you expect when you're wearing some trousers that cost fifty billion dollars?
Crysis blew me away, and not just because of how great it looks.
