I agree that a decent part of it's hype is driven by fanboyism and the love of everything Final Fantasy, but I don't think 6.5 is accurate. I've played the Japanese version for a few hours (total) and while I couldn't really do much considering I can't read Japanese, the gameplay is solid, it has a wide variety of characters and maps, and looks to have a lot of depth and content. Anyways, I'm a huge FF fanboy myself so I don't care. I can't wait for this to come out!
The only downside is that you can't install Linux. Most people don't care about that anyways, but if you do, that's the catch. the PS3 production cost has gone dow 70%, which is why Sony can make it cheaper now. They're not skimiping on more features to save money.
As of right now, not excited. Fable 2 was good, but I was expecting it to be a whole lot more than what it was. It was a big letdown, especially since Fable 1 showed so much potential. Fable 1 was great for its time. Fable 2 was good for its time. Anyways, it's way too early to tell. No info, and the trailer was a short teaser
Don't care personally, but it would be nice to see Sony implement a feature that a lot of people are actually ASKING for. I personally just want b/c. But a feature that a lot of people want, even if I don't really care, is better than them giving us a bunch of features no one requested or really cares about.
Yes, it's pretty lame. Nothing exciting, all minor features that no one has been asking for. Again. They should call this 2.90, not 3.0. If this is a major update, then the minor updates are gonna be even more minor in the future I guess
Sorry, but the later models of the 80GB PS3s do not include Backwards Compatabililty.
Chances are, the ones you've seen are newer models.

Ah i was afraid of this, geez what a bummer...i still think the old ps3 looks alot better, and 300 is the right price for me but geez, i guess that means i might have to consider hunting down a used 60gigger...
Well there is a rumor that Sony will give all models full BC through a firmware update, but that's just a rumor. At this point, not so sure. If this was true they should have announced it at their Gamescom conference. It's been too long now and they haven't taken any steps in that direction. In fact a Sony rep was just interviewed about this and said that b/c is not coming back because people don't want it. Which is BS IMO. I hope they bring b/c, I really hope they do. But at this point it looks very doubtful...
Meh. No new features unless you have a Bravia. I might get one next year when I go off to college to save space. But after looking at the shots and comparisons, the difference between the two models isn't that huge. At least, not in comparison to the fat and slim PS2's.
Sept 1st I think. 3.0 sucks anyways. The changes are so subtle and small it's not worthy of being called '3.0'. I think I would be happier if they called it 2.90, because if this is what Sony wants to show off on the big 3.0, I might as well officially stop expecting anything good to come from future updates. The dynamic backgrounds are the only interesting feature, but only if there will be free ones and/ or if people can make their own and post them online.
