Just celebrated new donk city festival in mario odyssey and OMG how cool was that!?

i remember loving the ratchet and clank titles on ps3 and thinking how they are so cool and fun. and then playing little big planet on ps3 and doing those later stages where you're jumping thru the wheels and timing jumps and what not and thinking wow media molecule is so creative.

...then i played mario galaxy 1 and was like, how wrong was i. this is how you do it. nintendo totally crapped on competition. then they dropped galaxy 2 and blew my mind. now playing through odyssey and omg the creativity on display here is just in a whole different league from the competition.

hats off to moon studio and a game like ori and the blind forest. i love that game and it's also a perfect 10 for me. it has great controls, graphics, sound, and atmosphere. but from level to level and world to world, mario odyssey even destroys my beloved ori strictly on a creativity level.

It sure is an incredible first year for the Switch but I see problems on the horizon. They used 3 of their 4 heavy hitter already and Nintendo makes one of each of their franchise during a gen so it kinda look like desert for the next year.

Once they use Smash and Metroid they have nothing left that may sell that system.

I think this is a big time underestimation of nintendo's IP and catalog. I've seen some crazy business estimate articles that say switch is on track to sell 17 million in 13 months? i don't know if it'll be that crazy, but it's may very well outsell wii u life time in it's first year. and sales will continue to be very strong if next year we see metroid and pokemon. after two years it may be equal to and on it's way to surpassing the xbox one user base. with such a strong selling and capable system (capable of AAA fps like doom and open world like skyrim) i think third party support will be strong. So even if nintendo were not able to sustain their 2 or 3 big games a year output, 3rd party titles could pick up some slack. the next installments of titles like resident evil for example may be on switch.

and in any case, mario zelda this year. next year pokemon metroid? we still have another year that can bring us smash and animal crossing. kirby and yoshi are in for next year. i don't think we'll see metriod and probably not pokemon next year for that matter. but they still have a slew of ips they can create games for. they can do a new starfox to make up for the wii u star fox. kid icarus. pikmin. and donkey kong. as well mario party. and as seen with arms and splatoon they seem to like creating new ips lately. also retro are not making the new metriod and they also confirmed not working on another donkey kong, so they surely have something brewing. finally as 3ds support fades they will be putting all their studio resources behind one system, thats a lot. first time in a long time nintendos development power won't be split between a portable and home console market as their sole console now is a hybrid.

every franchise i mention, except yoshi and kirby have huge system seller potential. i don't care how good a yoshi or kirby game is, i dont' think they move systems. i never played a yoshi game but enjoy the kirby ones with my daughter. but i don't think they move systems. but even tho kirby titles are more critically acclaimed than say mario party games, the mario party games sell in huge numbers. same with donkey kong, look at it's sales on wii. as well as animal cross.

also just because they release a huge mario game this year, doesn't mean mario packs up shop until next gen. on the wii we got galaxy 1 & 2. even the wii u saw two tittles the 2d new super mario bros and 3d world. plus the 2d mario games are bigger sellers. so for switch they can still do a 2d mario to take ownership of the 2d platformer genre like they did with the 3d platformer category with odyssey. there can still be a paper mario. and mario party. and as we've seen new and unexpected things like mario + rabidds. so i don't see the reason in the argument i see that nintendo blew their load early.

i think so. my favorite mario game so far. definitely a 10. aside from the gameplay, it's great on swtich, being able to put to sleep and continue right were i left off. oh and being able to warp to checkpoints within a world is a great feature too.

To be honest, I think it's a hearts and minds thing too. I don't think it's as formulaic as X system has Y amount of games and if you divide by Y the metacritc averages out to Z.

With the switch nintendo has captured gamer's attention again. Their great sales aren't soccer moms and nursing homes running out buying systems like the wii. It's mainly core gamers excited by the core franchises. Nintendo went from being doomed to getting DOOM! Coming from an underdog position where consumers/developers wrote them off, to looking like they are going to own the holidays.

And the people saying PS4 had more games, the same argument can probably be made for xbox one over switch. There were more games for xbox one than switch and a good few 3rd party titles in the high 80s like resident evil 7, south park, evil within 2, shadow of war, project cars 2, forza 7, destiny 2 all came to xbox and not switch, but no one is arguing xbox over switch.

Lastly, lets not forget switch is the new toy in town and plain cool. when my friend came over last weekend and wanted to play some co-op overcooked, i couldn't exactly split my dual shock 4 in 2 and hold them side ways and play the same way. And also, as far as new system launches go, is the switches launch one of the best new hardware launches or what!? when else did a system launch and in it's first year had titles like Odyssey, breath of the wild, kart 8, splatoon 2, mario + rabbids, doom, and xenoblade in it's first year?? When i got my ps4, i think i played resogun and PT until second son came out and that was the worse infamous by far. later i think i got the incomplete feeling and cut scene / story missing metal gear phantom pain...

Even if they bought ea or Ubisoft why would they ignore Sony’s install base? Microsoft is all ay the money. They bought Minecraft and still put it out on other platform. It’s much more likely we’ll see halo and gears on PlayStation that what you are suggesting here.

Because Microsoft would inherit that installed base once everyone jumps ship and moves to Xbox to play EA games.

I think you’re wrong in this regard. And it’s wishful thinking that Microsoft would inherit the playstation simply because ea games are not on PlayStation.

Switch is selling gangbusters right now with really no ea support. Except a horrible version of fifa. Switch is selling on the strength of its first party and exclusives which is also a strength of Sony.

Sony tittles like Gran Turismo for example has amassed millions of fans in all regions. as well as god of war. Plus naughty dog has been outing out acclaim titlrs from crash, jak and daxter, uncharted, and last of us.

Plus people That like Japanese games like persona or shadow of colossus will still get playstation. And don’t forget experiences thst range from ratchet and clank to heavy rain and Detroit become human.

If anything and people were really desperate for ea games they would get Xbox in addition to their PlayStation. and That’s assuming they don’t already have a capable PC to play the game. Unless your suggestion ea would ignore the pc install base as well? Lol

so either way ea exclusive to Xbox they would be ignoring a huge plays user base because all PlayStation sales are not really dependant on ea tittles.

hope that makes sense to you.

@drummerdave9099: “Yeah I'll take Nintendo and their 2 GOATs this year over all the PS stuff that nobody will be talking about in 2 years.”

Not even in 2 years, games no one is talking about right now!

I literally bought uncharted lost legacy day one and was super excited to go home and play. And I did. And I legitimately completely forgot about when making my original post and didn’t not include it. I did play horizons tho and that left more of a lasting impact on me.

@ArchoNils2: “What is the definition of "System of the Year"? i'm not sure how exactly anything is supposed to ever win against Pc? But I would give the Switch the 2nd and Sony 3rd place.”

Quite simply the best video game system. And by video game system I mean video game system. For example, systems Nintendo 64 GameCube Dreamcast PlayStation Xbox genesis Super Nintendo Wii etc.

In this case a personal computer isn’t even a contender.
