@bdrtfm: As a new user of Discord, I don't get it either, to an extent. If all platforms use it and games are cross-play, then it'll be great as a standard(if the game itself doesn't already integrate party chat). When it comes to parties, MS does their own thing well, as well as PS does their thing well. "Click on user, send party invite". Same with Steam.
Just started getting back into PC a bit and Steam has their own chat system and it does the job quite well. If Discord becomes the standard across platforms and games start being cross-play on the reg, then I can definitely see the benefit.
As to Sony and cross-plat, you should know as well as I that they likely have their reasons. I think the whole thing with FFXIV put a nasty burr in their bum. They do play nice with PC(outside of MS specifically).
@pcps4xb: With much of the world forced or wilfully staying in and doing more at home, I'd expect to see a similar jump from the Sony side. Pretty much all streaming and entertainment media will likely see these kinds of increases.
We'll see how well it holds up though, as more things start to open again.
