I bought a hat

I bought a hat but its not a real life hat its a hat for my xbox avatar, the reason I finally gave into the corporate money making machine that is Xbox Live's Avatar clothing ranges is that i had 80 points left and thats how much the hat cost..

I think it's prettysnazzy

Fleshreaper hat from penny arcade

Anyway so I also watched the StarTrek movie today which was incredible thats two catch up movies in two nights for me now and both have been better thanI expected.

In the last peace of news for today i bought the Xbox Live deal of the week which is Magic: The Gatheringi was never a big player of Magic in real life the cards where just much too expensive butI did used to own Microprose's Magic game on the PC, the only thing that really bugs me in this game is the complete lack of a deck editor you have to usepremade decks. Also the game doesnt feature this card...

Boring jobs to great games

We all know racing drivers and soldiers live exciting lives and that games like Modern Warfare and Forza 3 represent these lifestyles well but today I want to look at a selection of games that make normal jobs like you or I would have exciting .

So let's take a look at my top 5 boring jobs to exciting games.

cooking mama

Chef – cooking mama DS

Being a chef isn't really boring but it's a fast paced, highly repetitive type of job as you spend all day cooking the same meal over and over again but cooking mama DS gets around this by spicing up the mix with a heap of well designed mini-games and addictive game play

crazy taxi

Taxi driver – Crazy taxi

Driving screaming children around all day, answering the same question over and over again all day taxi drivers have an incredibly boring job but in crazy taxi you take your customers from point a to point b via whatever route you deem quickest from the hospital to the airport, no problem but I'm taking a shortcut through this building and over the roof of the adjacent building. Crazy taxi is a high fivin', fast drivin' take on this boring job and that why it speeds in at number 4.

theme hospital

Hospital Administrator – theme hospital

The real hospital administrator job involves countless hours of red tape and making decisions that mean life or death for countless patients every day but in theme hospital the biggest decision you'll make is where to put the inflater unit for your bloaty head patients or if you'll let the uppity dignitary visit your rat infested hospital. the game is a lot of fun and features a truckload of humorous diseases for you to cure.

Being unemployed- the sims

The Sims is slightly different than any other game on my list in that rather than concentrating on the jobs in the game rather the real fun is too be had as an unemployed Sim, save up all your Simoleans from your job in the city and you can be unemployed hold parties everyday and keep your Sim happier than ever.

tomb raider

Archaeologist – Tomb Raider

Finally at my number 1 spot today is tomb raiders take on the archaeologist, a real archaeologist will spend several months at a tomb wiping away the dirt one grain at a time and generally working hard at preserving each specimen. Tomb Raider on the other hand has you swinging, jumping and shooting your way through massive tombs grabbing the requested item and then legging it back out the game even has you fighting dinosaurs.

The happenings!

just a little update on the things happening in my life right now

demon on wheels

i finally completed inferno II in trials HD unlocking the achievement demon on wheels, a cool 30 gamerpoints and a sweet new gamer picture for my collection. this was definetly the hardest i have worked for any achievement/trophy in a long time...

SVER

I've been checking out the MAG boards across several sites and laughing at all the bickering between the factions, SVER seems to be getting it hard for being pompous but everyone knows the SVER home map is just unbalanced, right?anyway check out the boards here at gamespot for a taster of things to come once the game is released in january.

splinter cell

Bad news for splinter cell fans this week as it was announced that the game will be hiding in the shadows until april, i was really angry about this one and i figure they are just trying to avoid having to compete with bioshock 2 next month. im praying bioshock doesnt get delayed.i need some new multiplayer action in feb.

transformers

I finally watched transfomers 2 and was actually impressed by it, looking forward to the third one now even though megan fox won't be in it :(

My last part of the post today is a question for all the people who read this, lately i hafe been thinking of wasting my money by spending my unused MSpoints on avatar gear which is just crazy so i have 800 points to spend and i wonder what each of you would spend the 800 points on ?

Can game stores continue their current market strategy in this economic climate

As a frequent visitor to many game stores I very often find myself asking this same question. In this article I will look at 2 major video game retailers game stores (a major UK retailer) and GameStop.

The first store I will look at is GameStop, during the recent recession the retailer lost up to 38% of its stock value and even more recently in October 2009 director of the company Leonard Riggio sold over $60 million worth of shares leading many too believe that this was a sure sign of poor financial news to come.

Games stores in the UK operates just over 100 stores and it too has had a poor showing on the stock market with shares falling from a recession high of £3.01 down to 96p as it currently sits today. What surprised me most is just how little profit after tax this large retailer actually makes the consolidated income statement on their parent company's website shows that for the calendar year of 2009 the 100 stores made between them just £85,440 out of a revenue of £1.9 million.

With such poor results for each company I want to look at what has changed at these retailers since their respective high points in 2008. I'm going to do this in point form to simplify the reading.

Special offers:

Both stores have previously offered many special offers on their pre-owned games including buy one get one free and 3 for the price of two on many games. A sweep of each company's respective websites shows that this type of offer is a thing of the past with both retailers instead choosing to focus on trade-ins as part redemption for newer releases.

Game has chosen to go with £5 extra credit on any trade in when used against the value of new releases

GameStop are offering army of two for $19.99 when you trade in 2 titles from its list of games.

Neither of these offers any real value to the buying public as both stores currently offer very little for their trade-ins and with GameStop the offer is limited to newer titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Tekken 6 and Demon Souls.

Trade-ins:

Both stores at the moment currently offer very little in the way of value for your trade-ins. Game for instance will give you a meager sum of £17.50 for your copy of COD: Modern warfare 2 and £14 for your Left 4 dead 2. Buying them back however is a different story as these games will both set you back £37.50 in the pre-owned section.

In the past this service has been a great reason to visit your local game store in the hope of getting rid of your older games and acquiring yourself maybe 2-3 pre-owned games at a bargain, nowadays it's only useful as a last resort to get that new release you want when you're low on cash.

Treatment of customers:

This is an important one for me. As a customer I expect to be treated respectfully by staff yet both the aforementioned stores have policies that infringe my rights as a consumer.

Game stores have policies in place that say that they will not accept a refund unless the packaging and the security sticker is intact and that I should return it to the distributor when this is clearly against the Sale of Goods (Amendment) Act 1995 and indeed any pushing on your part will get you the refund but why should I have to argue with the store over this at all?

Even worse is GameStop's employee checkout policy which allows GameStop employees to take home and play any new retail release two weeks after release, these are the games that you and I buy as brand new for full price. If I bought a car as brand new I wouldn't expect there to be 500 miles on the clock just because an employee brought it home for a week and why should it be any different for video games. You won't even know if this as happened as GameStop remove every game from the box and store it separately.

So the stores have changed more often than not for the worse but what else has changed outside of the stores to increase the decline of the video game retailer?

Competition from large chain stores has hurt sales badly for many game retailers with stores like Tesco and Wal-Mart now using their considerable buying power to muscle in on this ever growing market and offering a wide selection of new releases at a discounted price. Stores like Xtravision in the UK have also muscled in on the trade-in games sector many times offering much more value for your game and retailing the pre-owned games at a better price. These stores using their existing infrastructure have been able to attract quite a few potential customers away from these dedicated game stores.

Another factor bearing down on these high street retailers is the gradual push towards games on demand with download services now on each platform such as PSN and Xbox live offering downloadable games for console users and services such as steam on the PC offering full titles for download right from your living room couch. The market has even seen new consoles emerge which have excluded the high street by only supporting downloads such as the PSP go and in the future the Onlive service.

These stores do have a few positive points however they both offer a wider selection of games than any other high street retailer and both offer reward schemes which do offer incentives for customers. However with the recession looming over us like a dark cloud and shoppers being more careful than ever with their hard earned money can games stores continue to sell games at the RRP while smaller retailers and supermarkets continue to offer bargain prices for the new releases and pre-owned games?

I for one don't think they can and unless they adapt to the current buying trends and push for a more competitive stance they may go the same way as all the Music stores and gradually fade from our high streets forever.

alpha99 proves that blue stripes do indeed make the car go faster. ona side notei must apologise to alpha as when i watched the replays i seem to be ramming his car quite a bit :P i even managed to shunt him first corner first race unintentionaly

My car for todays race

Today the Forza paintshop unionis having a race meet and as a participant my task was too spice up a 1980 renault 5 turbo, the design can be anything you want but i have choosen too stay with a 1980's theme and have based my design on the retro release of space invaders deluxe. which was released in 1980 in the arcades.

i have to admit the design was quite difficult as the car has an orange trim but im relatively happy with the results

Ever been mugged by a rich man ?

gameroom logo

As many of you know, I am a huge fan of the arcade. That being the case Microsoft's recent announcement of game room for the PC and Xbox 360 had gotten me very excited. Now I could recreate the feeling of playing against a bunch of friends on ****c games in a virtual environment.

It seemed to tick all the right boxes cross format support for my PC friends, I could play my games on the pc when I wasn't in the house ,1000 retro games to play and customisable rooms.

And then today we get the pricing $3(240 ms points) for each game, but if you want to play it on PC as well its $5(400 ms points) but that's ok because you don't have to buy the game right? Wrong if you want a single play its 50 cents (40 MS points and not the rapper) that's twice as much as it would cost to play it in an actual arcade.

With the 1000 games that would come in at a grand price of $5000 dollars for you to play all these retro games at home. The worst part is when you bring over a friend to play games in your room the friend will actually only be able to play it if they also own the game.

This for me is a huge problem because you can buy an actual arcade machine with many of these retro titles available to play in real life for around half of this price and your friends can come over and play it without having to buy their own.

Oh and for Microsoft I designed you a mascot.

game room mascot

nice huh?

To bring you back to my original question, have you ever been mugged by a rich man? if you buy game$room you will have been.

Where have the january sales gone ?

No sale on here

Where are the January sales this year? Has anyone else noticed a distinct lack of pomp and circumstance usually surrounding the shops in January? It's almost as if after all the great black Friday and post Xmas sales that shops are no longer interested in pulling in the shoppers from the streets.

For games in particular games that before Xmas where selling for half price and less have now returned to their recommended retail price. Here are some of my own personal observations:

store price comparrison

Oh and don't even think about trading in your games this month stores like Xtravision, Gamestop and Game have reduced the value of any item that was on sale before Xmas to its lower sale value meaning that you will get £18 for modern warfare 2 and £14.70 for left 4 dead 2.Gears of war 2 however will net you a cool £3 :(

Gamers are getting seriously ripped off at the moment when it comes to trade-ins, now on a side not I wasn't actually trading in these particular games but when I brought some of my older game in I was offered such a ridiculous price I had to find out what a relatively new release would get.

It seems the only thing I can buy on sale right now is a new sofa or kitchen. So I'm putting it out there, what's the best bargain you've seen this January or are the shops in your area forgoing the traditional January sale?
