Of course, underated could apply to talent also, including well established bands, but that's mared by opinion often, wheras judging by popularity or how "big" they are generally is the better way to say how underrated a band is. Also I'd like to add another band that I think is terribly underrated, the melodic death metal band Norther, whom are virtually unknown, despite having been around for a good while. Actually reffering to underrated according to talent, I must name Polish death metal band Behemoth, who are relatively well known, but are often overlooked, and who's drummer is one of the very best in the world at metal drumminig. ithilgore2006
There are way more bands underrated by talent than by popularity, I think. But like you said, it's much more subjective than objective. For instance, I can name five drummers who I think are superior in ability to Behemoth's.
I went to Virginia Tech for one year. Decided I shouldn't pay that much for the resources I was given, and skipped the last two months of school. Now I'm at a junior college, and I'm transferring to a university as part of a degree program. The social aspect of almost any four-year university is great, but the academics aren't. Many ****s are taught by foreign-born TAs whose grasp of the English language is difficult to understand. The entire online aspect is pretty much the same at my junior college as it was at VT. The teachers here have more time to help students, even though most of them also hold other jobs.
At VT, it seemed like the focus for all of my classes was quantity instead of quality. For general education credits, this is BAD. It's much better to learn at a slower rate and grasp the concepts fully than to learn faster but only get enough to pass the tests and forget it once you're out of school. Which is why I think it's better to go to a junior college for gen. ed. credits first. I know not all colleges are the same as VT, but after frequenting a few social websites, it's apparent that that is the case for a large portion of them.
Katatonia is not better than Tool. Both are decent, but Tool is better. I'm not gonna argue music theory here, so I'll leave it at that.
Bands that I think are underrated:
Genghis Tron (they're starting to get bigger)
Windir (now defunct due to Valfar's death, they were overshadowed by Darkthrone and Emperor and Mayhem and so forth)
Boards of Canada (extremely mellow music, it's amazing when mixed with hallucinogens)
Cynic, Aghora, and Gordian Knot (all three took progressive metal in a new direction)
The Stooges (the original crazy frontman, Iggy Pop)
Weather Report (awesome Jazz Fusion)
Mahavishnu Orchestra (more awesome Jazz Fusion)
The only drawback to going to a Junior College is that it is often quite difficult to transfer into a 4-year university that isn't connected to said Junior College by a degree program. And you have to keep living with your parents or afford your own apartment for two years (which shouldn't be that difficult). But the flexibility it offers at about 10% of the cost of a major university is a good thing to have.
