I disagree with the notion that it's silly to give any game a 10/10 score.
With restaurants, you have a 5 star rating system yeah.
And there are 5 star restaurants, yeah.
And what doe the 5 stars indicate?
That the restaurant is of the highest quality.
It doesn't mean that every meal served to every customer will be the best meal ever.
It just means that when all things are considered that the restaurant is offering the best service that it could be expected to, and as such is deserving of the highest accolades.
Same with games.
If you give GTA V a 10/10, does that mean that there can never be a better game? No, it doesn't mean that. In the same way that it doesn't mean that if you give the game an 8/10.
It means that at the point of release the game is deserving of the highest accolades, which on a 10 point rating system would be 10/10.
What is the point of the rating system anyhow?
It's a numerical format of recommending a game. It's a short hand version and summary of a review, in numerical format
It's no more complicated than that.
If the summary of the review is "this is a tremendous game, genre leading, offering tremendous value and you will not be disappointed if you pay money in order to own this game" then the game would be deserving of a 10/10 or very close to it.
