The price was not the problem, it's the fact that there was no first party games to back that price up for what it's worth, there was no Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, SSB, or Metriod to make up the lack of Wii U sales. The Wii U is amlost a year old so I guess a price drop this year was fine but still it needs more games really and that was the problem this Wii U had a start.
That's because the PS2 had a built-in DVD drive at the time when DVD was still a big thing and if the Dreamcast had it first, Sega would still be in power but the DC was an awesome system back then.
The Wii U has potential. Potential that Nintendo can't seem to recognize themselves is the problem I see. The only way I'm getting a Wii U is when the new SSB is out but for now, I love my 3DS XL and I'm supporting that awesome handheld so owning a Wii U can wait and getting a PS4 is my top priority right now.
