Its an AM2+ board, not AM3 which is why it only supports DDR2.

Nevermind, I misread your post.

But to the TC, you shouldn't get a new mobo just because of DDR3.

True but the alternative has more features and better room for expansion.

Buy them all. That is why you have a PC built for games. Right?

I actually intend on getting the same processor, but am wondering would the Cooler Master Hyper 212 be a worthy replacement of the stock heatsink/fan at $15 after the mail-in rebate. I'm a little cautious that it may cover up a DIMM slot, but from what I've read it should only be an issue with taller DIMMs.

Fine, or like me, buy a Thermaltake Contac. The Hyper wasn't in stock when I bought and needed a cooler. And yes, the stock 965 cooler sounds like D-Day in your case. For the OP buy a full ATX mobo like Gigabyte's 870A-UD3 and a proper case and PSU.

You'd be wasting your money. The PSU is a $15 pile of rubbish, the CPU will struggle with anything other than an office role or lightly threaded games and the GPU is a joke. The case is horrible too. And why would you buy a PC and then upgrade it? Build one yourself.

Stop the music...ofc the US2H supports AM3 fully.

Heck, I'm running a AM3 CPU on it as we speak.

Don't bother upgrading the mobo / memory. DDR2 and DDR3 memory hardly have any differences.

I bought 2 of those 4GB kit's but so far 4GB is OK. GTA 4 only used 3.1GB, the rest around 1.5GB.

All right, thanks!! After I get these, I should be good to go then?

Well you'll have the mobo, the ram, the 6870, the PSU and case. I assume you already have a monitor and a copy of Windows x64 along with a HDD. Should be fine. One thing though - if you want 2 6870's in the future (or any 2 Crossfire cards) you really should buy a Gigabyte 890FX-UD5 as the 870A has only a x4 second PCI-Express slot which will cripple performance. For 1 card, the 870A is fine.
