Here's a better question: Why the HELL did Shelby tell Lauren that the envelope was made by a certain typewriter. Clearly, Shelby was the only one who could decipher and conclude to such a clue. Lauren had no idea that it was the envelope's usage of a typewriter was a valuable piece of evidence. Plus, even if she did, she probably didn't know that the typewriter was SO rare that it must be taken to a shop. No, instead, Shelby, the killer, reveals this information. And then he takes her to damn shop!! It doesn't make sense.
One other thing (although this is a more lenient error) , wouldn't you expect Manfred to point out that Shelby has a Royal typewriter while he is being questioned? For example, Shelby asks all these questions like "What typewriter was used on this envelope?", "Do you know anybody who uses this Typewriter?", and "Is it an easy fix typewriter?" To all of these questions, Manfred could clearly answer "You should know Shelby, you own one and you take it to my shop all the time." Don't get me wrong. I love the game. Thought is was fantastic. But the twist seemed forced and unnecessary, with the byproduct being a bunch of "WTF?" moments.
