Matt Damon inexplicably deciding to stab them in the back as a solution to get back home was when the movie fell apart and threw away the compelling work it had done to that point.
I agree. The film dropped the ball after this.
They had already agreed to go 'home' once they received Murph's vid log about how the whole expedition was a sham. Matt Damon was there and heard them say this. Why then, does he assume that when they discover he lied to them that they will leave him behind? If it was from some sort of cryo-sleep psychosis, they should have brought more of that into the actually script.
After that we have Cooper's son being a dick to ramp up the tension in the scene when Murph is trying to work out who the 'ghost' is, and then some HORRENDOUS exposition as characters talk to themselves to express their emotions ("Dad! It was you all along.."), presumably because some of the audience might not understand (even though it's happens over 2/3rds of the way through a film that spends about 20 minutes explaining scientific theories...).
At the end of the day, I think there were just too many ideas crammed into one movie. I was actually much more interested with the current state of the world than I was with the post-Earth planet hopping.
I also though the themes of 'love conquers all' got a bit soppy towards the end. When they were laying it on so thick, it actually made me laugh (thank god the film was so loud that no one needed to SHHH me).
