Yes It can do 2 modes at the same time. I had the same problem as my HDTV has HDMI but my home theater doesn't. So I have the PS running HDMI video and digital optical to my home theater for sound. I just needed to go to the system settings on the PS to have it read both. I believe it is in the display settings! Hope this helped.dennmann29

hey guys im getting my ps3 tomorrow but first i have a quick question...

i plan on using my HDCP monitor for the video, but it doesnt have any speakers. i have a stereo system with a gameport that ive been using with my ps2. it connects with the red and white av plugs and sounds great..

-question is, can the ps3 output digital video through HDMI to my monitor AND output analog sound seperately to my stereo through standard av plugs? i know that hdmi does both sound and video, but can it do two seperate modes simultaneously? because if it cant then i'll have a problem.
