They just picked the low hanging fruit to cash in big time: 1) People were hating episodes 1-3 because they were way too different and 2) nostalgia for the episodes 4-6. The thirst of fans was palpable. So what's the logical answer, if you want to make money: make a movie that virtually has everything from episodes 4-6, ships, sound, music, settings, characters, plot, etc, everything.
