He'll be amazed at how long the average masses enjoy the same old crap... Re-use the same basic plot, change some jokes and fight scenes = huge profit from the masses. Just look at the many of the best selling video games... repetitive shit like the Last of Us (there are like 5-6 types of monsters?! Pathetic) were even highly praised.

@eggs_benedict:

Well, if he is releasing 4 Avatar sequels with sensibly the same plot (which is the case with many superhero movies), then you would have a point. Otherwise, you can't blame him.

Agreed 100%. An interesting hero makes the story good, an interesting villain makes the story great.

How The Hand has been portrayed by "Marvel Netflix" was a complete and utter failure. Totally lame, weak, stupid and boring villains. I could not take The Hand seriously in these series. The Kingpin as a villain in DD Season 1 alone blows The Pathetic Hand into smithereens. Even The Black Sky is nothing. Despite all the hype in the series about it, The Black Sky did not come across as that a formidable threat, far from the "ultimate weapon".

I didn't read the comics and know nothing about The Hand or The Black Sky prior to watching the series. And I shouldn't have to. Regardless, it's clear The Hand is a disaster to the series.

@syztem: True. It's an unfair criticism since all superheros are like that.

@sbnewsom: Really? That escape is a big deal? First of all, unless you live in North Korea or some parts in Africa, nothing you face is as "horrendous" you have made it sound like. Second, even if it is that "horrendous", "escape" through entertainment is hardly a solution. In fact, if it does become a "big deal" (as in "I need this to escape from real life") to someone, then that in itself constitutes a problem. So no, "entertainment" is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, especially not this kind of very mainstream entertainment.

Third, "threatened"? Pleeease. It's like claiming that litterature as a whole was threatened because the photocopier was invented. Ridiculous. HBO's profits may be threatened (a tiny bit) but entertainment at large was not threatened, by any stretch of the imagination.

Talk about having no idea about priorities... ironic.

@Nightflash28:

"they were very accurate in depicting nationalities"

Not really. Togusa looks like a western guy in the anime and yet...

"why is it such a big deal that ScarJo"

I don't know about other people but to me, she doesn't look at all like the Major. Scarlett with that black hair looks so fake and spells "trying too hard" and she doesn't even have a small pointy nose. And having "Motoko Kusanagi" as the name, doesn't sound right... trying too hard. It wasn't a big deal to me anyway but I certainly understand why people didn't approve.

@Nightflash28:

So Togusa is a western guy too?

In anime, most major characters have western features, especially female characters with pointy nose. As for eye-color, much like hair color, it means nothing in anime world. It is simply used has differentiators because in anime world, many characters have the same "ideal" facial features and bone structures. The Major has at times red eyes and her hair color have been blue at times and purple at times, so yeah... speaking about no clue.

I guess I'm not easily scared then. All of these I consider thrillers, except perhaps Poltergeist, which was borderline horror.
