Ha! Yes your comments are long, but I appreciate the discussion and your take on all of this.
I think at the end of the day we will need to wait and see which company efforts make the biggest impact this generation. I do find Microsoft's approach this generation very interesting. I think many players will appreciate how accessible Xbox games are in terms of platform option. Of course more Xbox market share will interest developers and encourage development of more games.
I found these numbers on Forbes dated May 9th, 2020.
PS4 (released in 2013): 108.9 million
Nintendo Switch (released in 2017): 52.48 million
Xbox One (released in 2013): 46.9 million (estimated)
The PS4 sold more than twice as much as the XBox One.
I would imagine Sony is looking to meet these numbers if not exceed them with the PS5 If we consider pricing being just right this generation. Not to mention the current state of affairs across the world where everyone is locked in with less to do.
Given the Xbox One's sales performance... yes I would think Xbox would want to grab as much market share as possible. I can see why they are being as aggressive. But I would think it's exclusive games that would help Xbox the most, not its services. The services are great, but I think exclusive unique experiences is what drives sales. And I just don't see them putting enough effort in that department.
They seem to have thrown next gen experiences only on Xbox out the door. Instead they would opt to release their games on their older/new console(s) and PC among other places. But if you ask me... of course I would always play my games on PC. I run 1440p 60fps on a G-Sync enabled led monitor, why would I settle for anything less then the best? I. I only vouch for the PS5 because it would seem to offer something I wouldn't find on PC. Haptics, pressurized trigger buttons, Demons Souls, possible TLOUPIII. That new Spiderman game, possibly Blood Borne II?
In the end its mostly about the exclusive experiences. Remove the unique experiences from the equation and Id never buy a console. Period. PC all the way, its really that simple.
Edit: Yeah my jaw dropped when I saw Horizon Zero Dawn on steam, and published under Sony studios. Time have changed and boy am I glad I never played the game. Now I get to enjoy the best version of this awesome game!
Everyone knows PC's can brute force its way to great performance and graphics fidelity. Nobody can doubt that these days. What is impressive with the new consoles and particularly the PS5 is its ability to produce results with paltry hardware that will cost little to the consumer. Yes we could have want for more processing power, additional storage space, but this would cost us more. What the PS5 will achieve in terms of performance will be done hundreds of dollars cheaper. This will benefit both the manufacturer and consumer. (also future gaming on PC, but more on that later)
Lets compare PC's use of SSD's in games to this coming gens game console SSD's. PC SSD's have many disadvantages with the handling of game data compare to console SSD's. The reason for this among other things is the wide variety of systems that need to be accounted for in PC game development. The PC's SSD has to jump through many hoops to get the data to where it needs to be at any given time; this is hugely inefficient and simply put... uncapped potential for next gen game experiences. The goal of the PS5 SSD/ Custom Flash Controller was to eliminate this inefficiency and realize the SSD's potential for real time data handling. To throw some numbers here the fastest SSD drives coming to the market will run at around 6.0 gb/s. This is quite fast, but these are numbers for the sake of keeping things simple for the consumer. In truth gb/s rating is but a piece of what makes SSD drives perform in the real world. Sony uses this example; the PS5's SSD is rated at 5.5gb/s but this SSD drive is fitted with a custom flash controller that bridges communication with both of the PS5's system processors. Because of this, Sony notes the PS5's SSD is more in line with speeds in excess of 9-12gb/s. Impressive stuff.
I'm but a passionate PC/Console gamer so don't just take my word for it. Go see what folks in the tech industry have to say. Linus, Mark Cerny and Unreal Engine head Tim Sweeney as example.
I recommend you watch Mark Cerny's PS5 developer deep dive if you haven't already. Developmental performance and familiarity with the PS5 has been achieved in as little as 1-2 month. This is huge when you compare it to the PS3's 6-12 months. So while you may have your reservations concerning dev familiarity time, know that Sony is aware of this and has gone through huge efforts to streamline developmental start up.
Yes chances are you will see this technology mostly used to its fullest potential in Sony exclusives, but don't be surprised to see it sooner. And from 3rd part developers who's dream game is now achievable thanks to the efforts made by Sony and others in this project.
They will either retract this model, offer more options or risk losing more fans. I would imagine people already grieve the lack of new game experiences. I don't think they are in any position to ask for more money right now. They need to kiss the players rear at this point because no ones buying at this price.
@Lord_Sesshy: The SSD for this generation of consoles will do more than start the games faster. The SSD will also handle data in real time while the games are being played. Your PS5 or XBOXSX wont play your typical games you've come to know this generation. They will most likely blow you away. These consoles are a huge step from the ones before.
This might be even more the case for the PS5 but at this point I'm not sure.
@gamerbum: I already didn't like Xbox's trajectory and what they bring to the table in terms of games. This new service model along with their lack of concern for bringing next generation experiences will bite them in the rear to the point of no return.
I am just patiently waiting for the 23rd to see what they have planned. So far this is ridiculous.
@squishytia: Linus from Linus tech tips tried to say the same thing regarding the PS5 SSD and was swiftly proved wrong.
Afterwards he posted an apology video. And apologized to the Lead designer for the PS5 Mark Cerny.
Is the PS5 SSD fast? Yes very fast, and it has integrated tech that streamlines many processes. So I wouldn't write it off or assume its available elsewhere to any degree, even PC.
@cage_92: You know Gamespot website keeps a record of your post for all to see yes? This comment is as worthless as the rest of your comments the past couple of months. Whats your deal? Why are you so insufferable as a person?
Earlier you commented on Death Stranded being an easy pass on PC due to hacking/cheating... really???? on a single player game with a pseudo online community. Wth?
Also making the assumption that Demon Souls Remake will run at 30fps? got any source? If you actually did your homework you would make a more informed assumption. But I suppose we cant expect much from a one sentance or phrase keyboard warrior such as yourself.
