Ex-exec spills the beans

AMD stands to generate more than $3 billion in revenue on its custom APU deal with Microsoft. AMD has managed to win all three console designs this time around, so it could make a pretty penny.

The value of the deal was leaked by Bob Feldstein, an ex-AMD chap who defected to Nvidia. Since it is a multi-year deal, AMD should generate the revenue over the next five years or so. At the moment, AMDs revenue is just north of $1 billion.

In addition to the Xbox One, AMD stands to generate heaps of cash on the PS4 and Wii U as well. Although we are talking about huge volumes, margins in the console chip market arent that big, but in any case the wins bode well for AMD.

More here.

So if it rains you know why

Microsoft is telling the world+dog that if you buy a new Xbox, you will also be getting the power of three more reside in the cloud. Group program manager of Xbox Incubation & Prototyping Jeff Henshaw told OXM that for every console Microsoft builds, it will provision the CPU and storage equivalent of three Xbox One consoles in the cloud.

This allows developers to assume that there's roughly three times the resources immediately available to their game. This means that developers can build bigger, persistent levels that are more inclusive for players. Already the Xbox One is ten times more powerful than the Xbox 360, so we're effectively 40 times greater than the Xbox 360 in terms of processing capabilities, a spokesMicrosoft said.

He said that if a user is looking at a forest scene and needs to calculate the light coming through the trees, or youre going through a battlefield and have very dense volumetric fog thats hugging the terrain the complicated up-front calculations are perfect candidates for the console to offload that to the cloudthe cloud can do the heavy lifting.

Cloud computation could even handle physics modelling, fluid dynamics, and cloth motion which require a lot of up-front computation, without adding lag to the actual gameplay.

Sony gave the PS4 50% more raw shader performance, plain and simple (768 SPs @ 800MHz vs. 1152 SPs & 800MHz). Unlike last generation, you don't need to be some sort of Jedi to extract the PS4's potential here. The Xbox One and PS4 architectures are quite similar, Sony just has more hardware under the hood. Well have to wait and see how this hardware delta gets exposed in games over time, but the gap is definitely there. The funny thing about game consoles is that its usually the lowest common denominator that determines the bulk of the experience across all platforms.

[QUOTE="Obviously_Right"]

Why did both MS and  Sony leave Nvidia for AMD? Are AMD that much better?

hexashadow13

AMD in general has crappy drivers and stuff is optimized badly for their stuff, so this leads to them being cheaper than Nvidia. And if it's consoles where each game is going to be optimized for the individual hardware anyway, that really isn't worth the money.

Do some research before you post biased information.

PS4 is shipping with 8GB's of GDDR5 unified ram at 176GB's a second.  No PC GPU right now comes with 8GB's of GDDR5.

emgesp

Lol that is for the whole system.

The 2GB video memory on my system has 176 GB/s memory bandwidth, looks like the 2gb video memory on my 2 year old graphics card is more efficient.
