How many 4 player megadrive games were available, and how many kids bought the multitap. 4 Ports built into the console WAS revolutionary[QUOTE="everquestlove"][QUOTE="SicklySunStorm"]
Because multitaps on both the Sega Megadrive/Genesisand SNESwere around before N64, as well as the famous J-carts from Codemasters for games like Micro Machines.
4 ports as a standard on the console itself was convenient, but hardly revolutionary.
My favourite console of all time was my Megadrive, easily...

Blah, whether or not it was "revolutionary" or not... who cares, right? Truth is, it was simply awesome and its standarization meant that four player split screen gaming was standard. Sure other consoles may have had multitaps (this news that SNES and Genesis had them too is news to me... seriously... who the hell can remember a four player game on either of those consoles) but N64 simply owned that gen's multiplayer.
that's what I'm saying[QUOTE="everquestlove"]How is 4 Controller Ports not revolutionary?SicklySunStorm

You'd still be wrong, of course, but at least I can understand your bias.
