...you know, your anti-S-E campaign is almost comical.

Almost.

And you're a marketing executive's dream, Fathoms. Just lap it up without asking questions, eh? Sorry, some of us are a bit more discriminating in our purchases. But then I glance at your avatar and remember your affiliation with a Sony dedicated website and then I realize it isn't even worth getting into it with you, that would be a waste of reason. And besides, you barely have the ability to keep up an exchange without gooning it up with insults.

By the way, how is your progress coming along on being able to engage other posters without resorting to personal attacks? At this rate, I'm sure your next suspension is just around the corner.

It's not a personal attack, and you can check any one of the last dozen topics I've posted in (most notably, the Heavenly Sword and my own topic on length in games) to determine the answer to your your last insulting question.

I don't "lap up" anything, and I never have. You did nothing to defend yourself here, you simply turned around and insulted me, which isn't surprising. You have three posts in this same thread, doing everything you can to convince everybody that Square-Enix sucks. You do that every chance you get. Nobody said Final Fantasy XII sucked. Basically, only you. Nobody believed Kingdom Hearts 2 was terrible...but I'm guessing you did. Dragon Quest VIII was one of my favorite RPGs of the last generation, but I must've just been "lapping" at the time. Valkyrie Profile 2, to which you condescended to give even the tiniest bit of credit, was received extraordinarily well by critics everywhere.

As for what I do, you may also notice I'm EIC of our sister site as well (Xbox Nerds), but than again, you're not interested in facts. And neither job holds any sway over what games I like or play. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I know your kind. The RPG elitist kind that basically says all mainstream RPGs are crap, and only YOU know what's good. Which of course means Square-Enix is just catering to the casual novice RPG player, which of course, you are not. Well, I can pretty much guarantee I've played just as many RPGs in the past 17 years as you, if not more. And I don't appreciate the constant bashing S-E gets from you...few REAL RPG fans do.

Unlike movies, it's very rare that great games don't get a lot of attention. The bottom line is that just about every single blockbuster is fantastic, and that's because good gameplay is good gameplay. It's almost universal.

Some titles just don't have the advertising they need, and others suffer from poor timing. Look at Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, for instance. Even if it were some awesome gem of a game - which I'm doubting at this point - it releases on the same day as Mass Effect...which could pose a problem.

I will say there are a few niche titles here and there that don't appeal to enough people (on the surface), like maybe Shadow of the Colossus, that don't do as well as they should. But again, I find that to be very, very rare. 99% of the time, fantastic titles in the game world are rewarded in spades, which is one of the reasons why I think this industry has been so healthy.

I second all of that.

But just as a general question, does anyone know EXACTLY what dictates how many Glyphs you get...?

Teufelhuhn

You get them throughout each segment based on your combo score. It tells you when you get each one. :)

Yes, I know it tells me. But it can't entirely be about combo scores...how do you get all 3 with Kai, for example, who doesn't DO combos? Just as many headshots as you can get?

I look back to high school and college and remember spending a lot of time with FFT and FF VII. ...yes, I am that old.

"We're never scared by the bang, we're scared by the anticipation of the bang." --Alfred Hitchcock

Therefore, it's really a no-brainer- it's Silent Hill (most of the time). It's much more about atmosphere and the anticipation of something bad lurking around a corner, IMO.

I highly recommend waiting for a price drop and then owning it. Any game that has arguably the best acting in game history should be part of any avid gamer's collection, IMO. Like I said in another post, I believe in rewarding quality and achievement, and there's a LOT of that in HS.

Anyway, I'm surprised you used the Sixaxis motion sensing in the first place. I basically always hate that, and let me tell you, I'm glad I used the analog for the aftertouch with Kai's arrows. ;)

CarnageHeart

Once I got the hang of Sixaxis, I didn't have any problems with it. My performance in the Kai section in the woods in chapter one is consistently pititful, but aside from that segment, I almost invariably hit what I aim at (provided I remember to level my controller before finding the next arrow or cannonball or whatever). But I admit I haven't been getting straight 3 out of 3s on the Kai segments.

I think story is an important component of videogames (kind of like in action movies, the plot of an action game explains why the villians need kill), but its the game aspect which determines a game's worth from where I stand. HS is worth purchasing for the gameplay/game design. Despite similarities to God of War, HS has its own vibe (what with the neutal blocking, environmental interactivity and tons of enemies tossed one's way).

Speaking of story, whoever follows Nariko in HS2 has a tough act to follow.

I second all of that.

But just as a general question, does anyone know EXACTLY what dictates how many Glyphs you get...?

Thats it, I beat it, yikes. I think six hours is generous, I didn't clock myself but it had to be around 5 hours or so. I feel like I accidently finished the game, like I entered a warp and skipped to the end, it is way too short, to simple of a game. But i have to give it to them, the final battle was excellent, thats how you do an epic final battle. There was even a touch of Zelda during that fight, I like it. Overall the story isn't really that great, its how its presented thats so amazing, but the actual plot is not much different than any action game. Thank god there is a hard mode, cause it would only take me about an hour or two to get the three medals in the stages I missed.

I will play this game again, not cause its so amazing i have to start it over again just cause I am not satisified with what I played, I feel I need more time to fully enjoy the action.

dvader654

Yup it is short game.

However, I have to disagree with story. The story was great because it had depth. There was another layer to that story beyond what's on the surface.

Heart of Darkness wasn't really that great of a book in terms of straight out plot. It was the layers and layers of what's in that story that made novel so famous and popular.

Heavenly Sword isn't THAT deep, but it does have another layer below and if you get that, then you will say the game does have good story. It's something we might often see in movies, but this is something we rarely see in games.

What other layer, please explain cause I saw nothing under the surface.

BTW I am trying to get all the medals, its fun when you are trying to master each area. Also I turned off the sixaxis control, what a world of difference in controlling arrows and stuff, analog control is so much better. Its a really good game, definetly worth it to experience it in some way, but I highly recommend renting it.
