As far as I know, they have not announced any date yet. This is a bit of a rip off as well in the sense that the maps will not be incorporated into matchmaking proper unless everyone has them. This sucks because they rarely come up in the regular matchmaking rotations. If I would have known that they would be pretty much useless then I would not have bought them.
Castle Crashers is the one to pick in my opinion. I have both and found castle crashers vastly more enjoyable. You'll finish BC and probably not play it much after that. Castle Crashers is a riot and has great replay value.
I think the reason that MS is implementing the avatar system is twofold: The first is to make more money. Of course the coolest clothes ect. for your avatar will come at a carefully selected amount of MS points. The second reason, as we all know is to cater to the less hardcore.
I'm a little on the fence with respect to the avatars. I think they could be cool if they implemented the system properly. As noted above by one insightful user, there is a lot of cool things that could be done with this system. Perhaps finishing a game with all of the achievements would entitle you to a particular uniform or something.
At any rate, we all love our 360s with or without the avatar system. The fact that the old dashboard is a mere guide button push away seems to suggest that MS is trying to please all of its users while trying to recruit new users from the family/Wii market. We will have to wait and see how cool it is when the fall update occurs. My only hope is that the coolest of avatar clothes would be EARNED and not purchased though I think we all know that this won't be the case.
The feature that I would most want would be a 'quick accept button.' I always find it annoying that you have to go through so many steps to answer a chat. It would be so much nicer if you could just do some button combo or something without the hassle.
Apparently Bionic Commando is just awesome (out this Wednesday). IGN gave it a 9.4 and claimed it was easily the best arcade game out so far. In short, get that one first.

Castlevania
there are many others that I feel are worth getting but the above ones come with my genuine seal of approval.
