I wouldn't say that it's self defense. I'd say that the thief got what he had coming to him. The best way to stop crime is to allow people to defend themselves and their property with extreme prejudice.

Whats your opinion of randianism?
I don;t like it much, but so many critics of Objectivism (particularly on the left) do nothing but strawman. There are certainly good arguments against Rand's ideas, but the ones I see most commonly presented are very poor, and tend to totally misunderstand just what it is she meant when she said "selfishness is a virtue" and "altruism is evil". Lots of people judge the philosophy after hearing sentences like that and nothing else. As someone whose ideas are often strawmanned, I feel a little bit of sympathy. Just a bit, not enough to defend their lousy philosophy of course.
