Now onto American Psycho starring Christian Bale again. Before I continue, if you had not seen this movie and are disturbed by intense scenes involving extreme violence, torture and somewhat violent sex, then do not watch this. With that out of the way, lets get into it.
I dunno why, but I have a soft spot in my heart for all films involving some kind of psycho commiting horrible acts or horrible things just happen and the ending is always somewhat ambiguous, or basically any kind of psychological thriller type movie. Such movies include A Clockwork Orange, Donnie Darko, Fight Club and The Butterfly Effect (ironically my top 4 movies of all time). American Psycho is not for the squeamish or the weak at heart. Christian Bale plays as Patrick Bateman, a rich, young man who appears to be a normal 'yuppie' living in Manhattan. He is narcissistic, greedy and completely psychotic. The film opens with him talking to some friends in a fancy restaurant. However it doesnt take long for you to see what kind of man he really is. As the film progresses you see more and more of his true side appear.
The first acts of extreme violence he commits are stabbing a homeless man and stomping a dog to death (dont worry, it happens off screen). Later on the agenda becomes rape, cannibalism, torture, mutilation and necrophilia. He must always be better than those around him, and can not stand it if he is not. One such example is when they are comparing business cards and when he looks at Paul Allen, his arch nemesis', business card, which is superior to his, and he even remarks "Oh my god... it even has a watermark". Although the movie is known for its graphic depictions of violence, it should also be noted for its dark humor as Patrick is rather funny, such as explaining the song Hip To Be Sqaure and dancing before killing a man (he shall not be noted for fears of spoiler). Several lines can deliver laughs.
As the film goes on, his mask of sanity begins to dissolve as he alludes to his actions in conversations and references serial killers in sentences. He often hints to others that he is killing people, but they disregard it. In the end
He confesses to his lawyer that he killed Paul Allen (the dude he attacked while listening to Hip To Be Sqaure) and 40 other people along with other acts but the lawyer just takes it as a joke, saying he had lunch with Paul recently. The ending is brilliant because it appears that he had never commited any of the crimes in the first place and it was figments of his imagination. This can be seen at the start when he tells the bartendress that he wants to kill her and play with her blood, but doesnt hear it, along with various other similar incidents. Keep in mind this is my interpretation of the ending and it might not be true, but its the most likely.
I absolutely loved American Psycho. The ending is great and totally unexpected. If you can, get your hand on the book because I have heard that it is much better, but if not the film is perfect as it is. Christian Bale plays his role magnificently and I couldnt have seen anyone else except Edward Norton (who was offered the role) take it on with the same charisma and calibre. If you're a fan of Dexter I recommend this becuase I see them as similar, with AP being somewhat more 'hardcore'. The presentation of the 'perfect' Patrick Bateman is well done, especially when he starts taking a more sinister turn and his immaculate face starts to become not as perfect bit by bit, a reference to his mask of sanity dissolving. It is just a great film, but as said before not for the faint of heart.
I rate American Psycho **** and 1/2 stars. Yes, I rated this higher than TDK. For anyone who wants to complain, get over it for this is me, not you, we obviously have different tastes. Both are great but I enjoyed AP more.
Anyway thats all, see you space american dark psycho knights (:P)
