Apples and Oranges, both good cards. Why no the GTX 295? I assume you're talking about the 2gb versions of both cards?

I tend to consistently trust Eurogamer over any other source at the moment, also check Zero Punctuation if he happens to be reviewing (or more likely mocking) a game you're interested in. Usually though my biggest source is from gamers themselves, I dont particularly trust mainstream reviewers (even GameSpot) due to the links they have with certain industries, they also tend to downgrade certain great games. E.g. Games like Mount & Blade and Arma are severely downrated, but are in fact great games. Just peek around the forums for each games to get a rough idea.

  • They last longer
  • They are cheaper
  • Better controls
  • Visually Superior
  • Smoother
  • #1 in Companies like Valve, Blizzard
  • Greatest Back-Catalouge Ever, more games
  • Steam and other DD serives
  • More competitve imo (although some console games are really competitve too.)

I agree with all points except the highlighted one - while PC games are generally cheaper, keeping up-to-date with PC hardware is very expensive business, and makes it to be an expensive hobby. Dont get me wrong, im first and foremost a PC gamer however I can understand why people prefer consoles, not everyone wants to dish out hundreds every couple of months to keep their system up to date.

I appreciate the offers and links, but I live in the UK, so am only limited to British or European merchants. Another thing, which would you recommend? The Nvidia 285 or the radeon 4870 HD 2gb? And which processor? Is a 3.0ghz quad core going to get the best out of my games or is it worth spending the extra cash on an i7 processor? Or shall I go down the AMD route? Sorry for the eternity of questions, want this to be right!

$10,000 ?! LOL. I know im not paying for it but I dont want to milk my parents dry :P I was hoping for something top of the line, i.e. ati 4870 2gb cards, top i7 processor, maxiumum ram etc, not something thats gonna need me to take out a second mortage! Will $2500 be stretching it abit? I could just ask them to fund the parts as I build the thing myself instead of having to pay over the top prices for manufacturers.

As far as im concerned, BF2 is still more active that 2142, its still a great game. As for an online fps, it depends what you're looking for. If you want a brainless shooter then go for Call of duty 4/5 or counterstrike. If you like abit of teamwork then something like TF2 or Arma 2.

I've managed to get accepted to do a new masters at an excellent university, and to celebrate my parents have offered to buy me a luxurious gift. Now being the poignant nerd that I am I've asked for a new pc :P. (Car was out of the question, I drive a really nice car as it is)

I havent really been into the whole PC building malarchy for some time so im not quite sure thats seperate parts are hot right now. So im wondering if you guys could help me structure together some top of the key parts (i.e. graphics card, processor) to build that dream system.

Thanks!

Nope, getting use to the graphics of GTA IV and the gameplay of San Andreas has made it impossible to go back, while I appreciate that it was a great game back then it hardly is playable now. Unless its the first GTA you play.

You're not alone OP, I dont see what the fuss is about either. I bought Orange Box mainly for TF2, and to be honest it just seems like im forcing myself to like it. I can understand why its fun but I dont get anywhere near as much enjoyment as I do with other team-based online shooters, not just the brainless shot em ups. Guess its just one of those games with an extremely devoted fanbase, these guys have more or less been around since the first TF.

FOOTBALL is the only sport I can properly follow. AMERICAN Football (Not football, soccer is a silly word invented by you yanks) is far too start-stop for me, just seems boring. But hey one mans pleasure is another man's...soccer?
