The DRE was a problem and I fixed it for myself multiple times and for several of my friends. It was just an easy fix and despite voiding your warranty it didn't matter all that much. I eventually sold my first PS2 and the warranty was void but I still got some money for it after trading it in and quite frankly if you get hundreds of hours of game play I think you definitely got your money worth. My PS2 I have now I have had no problems with anyway. With the 360 I have not had the RROD but I did purchase one of the newer consoles. If you bought a 360 after July of '06 it should have the 65nm chips and the new heat sink and I have heard of much fewer problems with anyone with a console dating after. Maybe some of this is me in my own little world but there it is anyway.
I am not a moder but I do have some what of an odd view. When it comes to some games I think people will pirate and play it as a demo which I think is ok. But if you are very satisfied with your "demo" You should purchase the game and support the companies. That's my odd little view on the topic.
I am playing on my PS2 right now and enjoying every second. Being an RPG fanatic I love the PS2. It has come out with a very diverse selection of RPGs. The one I'm playing right now and just recently purchased was Rogue Galaxy. The PS2 will never die and my play time on FFX proves it: 250+hrs :P
I think you are in the right to ask for help first and I have respect for those that are willing to try and fix the problem themselves, so kudos! Anyway my 360 would get to the loading screen as well but it froze up. The 360 logo would appear but you could not see the logo shine or anything of the sort. So after turning it off and then back on again it would load right up and I was good to go. Your problem sounds similar and I unfortunately do not have a solution. I would however recommend you to look into gamespots tech support to see what you can find and maybe see if any of the mod people would have a solution. If you don't get any results soon though I say its time to cash in on that warranty.
The prices on a new console will be the same anywhere you go but...
If you go onto newgg.com or tigerdirect.com you will might find them for somewhat cheaper. However if your parents are unwilling to lend you their credit card or you do not have one of your own you will need to purchase your own pre-paid visa or the like.
Besides that there is the option of getting a refurbished one but like previously mentioned it will probably have some issues.
