Being upfront has a much higher chance of not working than getting to know her and then asking.

You just can't be like "hey i want to have sex with you". You gotta just be upfront that you think she's cute and you'd like to get to know her on a date. That way you don't just become her friend and get sent to hell. If you seem nice, and she's even remotely attracted to you, then you're set, if not oh well, it was never gonna happen anyways.
