It's one thing to rally against a regime with a single distinguishable figurehead (Arab Spring). Even rallying against an ideology is doable (communism or capitalism). Rallying against an entire system and set of ideas (much of which does not even exist tangibly), with many different people involved, and no one person being supreme, is quite different.

While I do not argue with this, I can never understand why there are certain groups who claim as such (that their regimes were not what they were claimed to be), and yet otherwise defend any of these regimes to no end.

You're right. Communism is no longer dangerous simply because it's neither relevant nor a practical economic driving force in any significant country. Your movement died as anything to be taken seriously 20 years ago.
