Review: Pioneer HTS-GS1 Gaming 5.1 surround Home Theater in a box.
So you have your awesome HDTV, Your favorite console, and all the latest peripherals; but if you are like a large percentage (myself formerly included) of the gaming community you are still ignoring one simple thing that will greatly improve your gaming experience, surround sound.
First of all lets consider why this is such an important, but often overlooked, part of gaming. Your brain is made for sound, well technically it is wired for smell but, more brain power is devoted to processing sound than touch and taste combined. Some blind people have even master echo location, so hearing can actually replace site! Our hearing is the only sense that allows us to identify people and animals behind us before they get close enough to cut us open. Honestly in a game what tells you better the location of the enemy sniper the side of your screen flashing or your ears which can not only tell you exactly what angle to turn but can estimate a distance. In the frag or be frag world of on-line gaming it is a life saver. Further less violent games are also enhanced by making you feel a part of the scene.
For all these reasons I review for you the Pioneer HTS-GS1 My best gaming investment to date.
Firstly this is a fairly powerful system the listed specks are 130 wats under new more truthful FTC listings, however using the old guidelines that most people as used to you would call it a 600 watt system.
You get everything in one box. The amp and actual electronics are inside of the sub-woofer so what you see on the shelf is actually just a small remote display and infrared receiver, so it sets up in a smaller space. It seems like a nice feature now but it makes me worry about the longevity of the product.
The set up is a breeze and it includes a microphone for automatic optimization of the levels and timing.
Now let me tell you what makes it so awesome for gaming, 2 optical inputs one for your 360 and one for your PS3, an additional digital rca input for you tv out, and 1 analog input for your wii. Perfect for the modern gamer. And of course it has the obligatory AM FM radio tuner.
The systems remote doubles as a remote for your 360 which is a nice addition.
Now for the bad news the audio is not the quality you would get from a more expensive system. But hey even tough amazon wants 300 dollars for the system Walmart.com comes to the rescue selling it for 130 dollars and is elligeble for free shipping to your local store. I have also seen it in at-least one local store for only 140 dollars. At this price you canzt expect the very best audio quality.
Don't get me wrong the tone and clarity are at least five times better than my TVs speakers. It is just that I have heard nicer. Lets review
Pros:
1. Great value (at the 129 dollars I paid)
2. Opens up a new world of gaming
3. 3 digital inputs including 2 optical (go ahead look at the prices of any other system that includes 2optical or hdmi ports)
4. HTIAB means all your needs are there in the box
5. Easy setup
6. Compact design
Cons
1. Could have better sound quality
2. No hdmi
3. Hard to find
All in all if you have 150 dollars available for gaming, and don't already have surround sound, buy this system!
