Boycott this console plain and simple. We can't support this. Boycott digital distribution and Steam as well, because this is the inspiration for this crap, only M$ is taking it to the next level. Buy physical media only, and only if it is not steam crippled or DRM crippled as the xbox one games will be. Vote for your rights as a consumer, vote with your dollars.
"With the Xbox One, Microsoft showed us everything they think we want. Perhaps they are right. But when marketing trumps creativity, we get a conference like the Xbox One reveal, which stayed right on message by saying almost nothing we’ve never heard before."
Yup. Plus the draconian DRM, and you have a gigantic middle finger to gaming and creatives and happiness in general. But hey, at least we have access to DRM riddled dudebro games like killthebrownpeopleduty.
@Vividnightmare @XxTheEvilxX PC games have been ruined by Steam, which is exactly the kind of DRM all digital crap-fest these companies want. I now have to import physical games form europe because over there they have some common sense and still support them. But even THEN I have to hope it isn't a steamworks game, which effectively turns it into the same kind of crap MS is trying to pull.
@jinflorida People buy used games from elsewhere, including online. In many cases for systems that are not supported at gamestop anymore too. I have often gotten far better prices than what gamestop offers. Don't paint with sucha broad brush. If we support this kind of crap, then you will have whole generations of games you will never own and can never rebuy them physically at a later date for a great price.
@XxTheEvilxX It's all about draconian control over the games or "content" as they like to call it, that you buy. They want an all digital future, just like valve wants, so you have no rights left as a consumer and you are at the whims of the companies. Having physical media is one of the ways consumers can protect themselves.
We should never ever buy digital games frankly, for this very reason. Physical media that is not steam or DRM crippled is the way to go. If you can't get that, then move on to another platform.
@Vividnightmare "You know what that implies right? Microsofts first goal will be to remove physical ownership of games, so be quiet about it."
Exactly! It's about greed and control. DRM free physical copies of games, regardless of platform, should be the only purchasers honest gamers who care about the health of our industry support.
@Granpa0 @keldarironfist I think Steam is abhorrent, because now I have to import copies from Europe because they still carry physical media, and I still have to pray they aren't steam crippled. However, I agree that it is a different beast on consoles, and this stuff with M$ sets an awful precedent.
Regardless of platform, including PC, gamers should only purchase physical copies of games that are not crippled by steam or any other form of DRM, including what M$ is pulling with there new console. Vote for your own consumer rights, and your own interests. Cheaper prices are all well and good, but I am happy to pay a bit more to own my games.
Steam and other DRM services cater to the lowest common denominator, people who have no respect for or interest in actually owning the things they buy. The games industry grew to huge numbers on the back of physical media and used games, but *now* its a problem? It's about fleecing the consumer. Digital services give you more for less right? It's a long rental, that's it. When that service dies? Your games are gone.
Ebay prices for older physical games from yesteryear are going up, not down, because many in our community recognize the trends and how valuable physical media will become in an ever increasing era of morons who think digital is the way to go because they get a discount.
@abdoalwaer @keldarironfistYou're a moron. I have been gaming on PC since the 90's. I play on consoles and PC. Steam is the worst POS to come along in some time. I advocate physical non DRM copies of games regardless of platform. It's better for the consumer to own their content.
You would think an intellectual giant such as yourself would catch on to this. But morons rarely ever vote in their own best interests. (and no, getting something cheaply that you don't own doesn't count, and you, and others like you, don't speak for all of the "PC master race"). I am quite grown up, and that's precisely why I and many others fight for our rights as consumers.
I generally don't agree with Tom's editorials. But this is spot on. Nuff said. People need to fight digital distribution which has spurred this mentality. I lay the blame equally at steam and the PC community as much as I do M$. Always buy PHYSICAL media, and never support platforms that gimp your physical media. Vote with your dollars!
