The Sickness: Day #2

Well, I'm still sick and staying home from school, I really should work on my assignments which are due tomorrow, but anyways...

Today is not going well for me so far, mostly on the gaming side of life...

I decided to play a bit more of DOOM, since I plan on reviewing sometime in the near future. Well guess what, I got up to a certain point in the game, and it tells me that I have finished episode one. It turns out that the version I have doesn't include the entire game. :( Looks like I'll have to try and buy/download the full version.

So after that little mishap, I decided to play Counter-Strike instead, but for some reason my connection is really slow, and I can't play CS properly because of the lag. Usually I only lag when someone else is on the internet, or when the signal is bad in my room. But today, I'm the only person at home, and I'm out in the back room where the signal is great. WTF?!!! Why am I lagging?

Anyway, after all that, I decided to get on GS for a bit then finish my homework, so that's what I'm doing.

Sick Experiences of Badminton, History, and the Land Down Under

Well, as you may or may not have guessed by the title, I am sick. :( (Actually, I don't think anyone could have figured out anything from that title). I have a terrible sore throat, persistent cough, and stomach cramps so bad I can hardly stand up. So I will probably be taking the day off school tomorrow, which is good in a way, because it gives me time to finish my last two assignments, work on my music, and hang around on GS all day.

As for the badminton, I am posting about it for a number of reasons, first of all because we are playing badminton in Phys Ed at school. Well, we were playing, today was the last session, now we move on to a different sport. Me and my friend wound up second on the ladder, and probably would have been first, but we didn't get the opportunity to play against the team in first place. But today, we decided that we are going to make a video about badminton, I won't go into to much detail except that it will be EPIC.

What I have to say next doesn't really have much to do with history, but in fact relates to my new song. It's not yet finished, but once it is I will record it and make a video. The title of this song is History is Now. Because my band broke up, I am writing and playing the entire song myself, vocals, guitar, drums, and maybe piano, as well as a whole host of strange non-musical noises. The only problem is, I'm a terrible lyricist and singer. My lyrics aren't that bad, but my singing is painful to listen to, so if I can, I'll get someone else to sing, and put that on the recorded version. When it's finished, I will post the video (and my badminton video) here and on YouTube.

The final part of this blog relates to a book I am reading. It's called Down Under, and is by Bill Bryson. He is American, and the book relates his experiences when visiting Australia. I think it is a great, hilarious read, especially for Australians, because a lot of his opinions about us and our country are so true, yet so unbelieveable, that they are both easy to agree with and laugh at. If you're Australian and haven't read it, I strongly recommend it, but if you're not, it might be wise to avoid reading it if you plan to visit Australia in the near future.

No language guessing today, I'm to tired and sick, and the last one was only two days ago. Bye for now, hopefully not forever. :D

Word of the Week #2-4: J-M

That's right, WotW is back, and better than ever. Today I've got a brand new episode for you, featuringthe letters j, k, l and m. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I am working on a blog header/sig for WotW, but sadly, it will not be in use until next week.

Words of the Week:

juggins- a simpleton; naive person; fool.

kakistocracy- government by the worst or least qualified citizens

lethologica- the inability to remember the right word for something. Also a psychological disorder that inhibits an individual's ability to articulate thoughts by temporarily forgetting words in conversation.

meretricious- 1. Attracting attention in a vulgar manner; plausible but false or insincere

2. Of or relating to prostitutes or prostitution

Quotes of the Week:

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." -General George Patton

"The man who can smile when things go wrong has thought of someone else he can blame it on." -Robert Bloch

Man of the Week: E. Gary Gygax- As I'm sure most of you know, on March 4th this year, one of gamings greatest influences died. As creator of Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax contributed more to tabletop gaming, and RPG gaming in general, than most other people in the history of the industry. So this is my tribute to him, one of the most brilliant people gaming has ever seen.

Okay, that's it for this week, halfway through the alphabet now, and still going strong (sort of). Thanks for reading if you got this far, and remember, any suggestions and contributions are welcome. [Current scores for language guessing: Mii_Wii_and_RPG- 1, OrkHammer007- 1.]

New review

I have decided that I am going to start reviewing a lot more games, and I have just finished my second review. I picked one of my favourite standout games- Riven: The Sequel to Myst. I'm not going to post it here because I would really like people to chack it out and rate it. If you do, while you're at it, you might also like to look st my first review which I wrote a while ago. This one is for Alien Hominid, another favourite of mine.

I am considering a few games to review next, I gave up on Unreal because it kept crashing, I think its too old for my system. If you want to recommend a game to review, just tell me, but please make sure it's in my collection.

A Change of Heart

Well, I have decided that I am going to bring back Word of the Week, otherwise I would be running out of things to blog about. Plus, I realise that some people enjoy it and that others only ever comment on my WotW blogs. But anyway, there are two things that are annoying me about bringing it back.

First of all, I decided last night that to bring the series back, I would make an awesome blog header/sig. I spent close to an hour of solid work in GIMP, and I was almost finished, and pretty satisfied with how it was turning out, when suddenly GIMP decides to crash on me. This isn't the first time it's let me down, but it's the first time I've been in the middle of something that I haven't saved. So disappointingly (is that a word?) there will be no blog header announcing that WotW is here to stay, maybe I'll make another one later...

Secondly, I have a tonne of homework and about 4 or 5 assignments to work on this weekend, so I'll have less time to do that. First of all, I have a maths paper due Monday, then an Outdoor Ed. assignment and a Social Studies essay due Wednesday, then on Thursday I have an English assignment and an essay due, as well as a Health assignment. Hopefully I will finish all that before Sunday, so I can spend some time making a worthwhile episode.

But back to good news. Next weekend will be a 5-day weekend for me, because we have Easter Friday and Easter Monday as public holidays, and then Tuesday is a public servants holiday, so the buses aren't running and we don't have to go to school. And perhaps the best news of all (for me at least), TV will finally be worth watching again, because my favourite show- 'How I Met Your Mother' is coming back on Thursday. I think that's it, but if not, I'll edit it in later.

Charge of the Light Brigade

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!' he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre-stroke,
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Don't ask me why I'm posting this, even I don't know, except that it's my favourite poem and I felt like sharing. And for those of you who haven't heard it and are foolish enough to ask, no, I didn't write it. This was written by Alfred Tennyson in 1854 about the Charge of the Light Brigade, which actually happened during the Crimean War.

So that's it, Heippa everyone. (Guess the language if you can.)

Just one foot in front of the other...

Well, as you may have figured out from the title, this blog is going to be about walking, both metaphorical, and actual walking. So, I guess I'll start with the real walking.

I have always liked walking, but I also found it boring, and I've never had the time, so I rarely go for walks. But a few nights ago, I thought it was a really nice night, so I decided to go for a walk, since I had nothing better to do. It was raining lightly outside, which may have put some people off, but not me, I love walking in the rain. I also like walking at twilight, just as it's getting dark. The sky, and in fact most things, look so much better in this type of light. I started off walking around our neighbourhood, and eventually I got to an area of land that hasn't been developed, not too far from where I live. There are usually a lot of kangaroos around here, so I thought I might try and take some photos. At first it looked like there wasn't a roo in sight, but just as I was about to give up and head back onto the road, I saw a fairly big group of them. As soon as they saw me, stomping around and waving my camera-phone in what must have seemed a threatening manner, they turned and hopped away a short distance. So, being the stubborn fool that I am, I chased after them, at first trying to be stealthy and sneak up on them, but when that didn't work I just ran after them as fast as I could. Eventually I lost them, without getting a single photo, and then I realised that I'd gotten myself lost in hte scrub. So I stumbled back in what I thought was the direction of the road, and after nearly ten minutes I found a landmark, a bit of white ribbon tied to a tree. So I found my way back and the rest of my walk was fairly uneventful, apart from nearly spraining my ankle when I tried to run in skate shoes. I had a great time and it was great exercise, but when I got home however, it was a different story. I'd stayed out until after 8 pm and my parents were not impressed, considering it was a school night. But anyway, now I have made it my goal to go out walking at least twice a week, and I might even get into competetive walking (yes, I'm serious) since I'm a pretty fast walker.

Well, after that boring ramble that I'm sure noone cared about, I'm going to tell you about the metaphorical walking I've done. Looking at my profile, I realised I've taken a huge step forward, and reached two years on Gamespot. I joined March 5, 2006, but I only really became active about mid-2007. Since then, I've racked up 1652 forum posts, 41 blog posts (42 after this), 70 union blog posts, only one written review, 4 emblems (pathetic), at one point over 130 friends, but now it's just a manageable 52, 802 profile views, and 262 tags. I've also joined about 50 unions, most of which I have left, been officer in 8 unions, been leader (very briefly) of one. I have only been modded once in my time here, but I hope to avoid that happening in future. I am yet to post any videos, but I can guarantee when I do, they'll actually be worth watching, not like some of the crappy videos I've seen some people come up with.

Well, I think that's it for now, I would write about the Mandurah Crabfest, which was this weekend, but then this post would be way too long, so I'll leave it for later. Also, I might start up WotW again next week, depends what's happening.

Well, I've finally decided that instead of having a tag-line, each week I will say goodbye in a different language. Feel free to guess what language I use.

M'Asselema.

Word of the Week: Indefinite Hiatus, plus (+) Friends and Union cleanup

As you may have noticed, if you pay any attention to my blog, last week I didn't post an episode of WotW, and you probably didn't see one this week either. That's because I have been incredibly busy (you see, I have this thing called a life) and it just takes so long to do all the work and research to create an episode of WotW. So I am indefinitely suspending the series, probably for another two weeks or so, until I can be bothered continuing.

Also, I have been busy, not only with life, but on GS as well, so I do not have time for all my unions any more (and I'm getting bored and frustrated with some of them). So I have resigned my officer position from some unions, and resigned altogether from others. I might rejoin at a later date, but who knows? I am also growing tired of my ridiculously large friends list, most of whom I don't know or speak to, so I'm cutting that down to a manageable number.

So if I resigned from your union, sorry, I don't have time. If I'm no longer tracking you, make an effort to get to know me or comment on my blog or something, and I might consider adding you again.

That's all for now, it's time for the Insanity Dragon to sleep.

Modded

That's right, I also recieved the big M, for posting a game thread. So if you've wondered why I haven't been active, there's your reason. Considering I posted that thread about a month ago, it actually took them quite a while to catch up with me. All I got was a three-day suspension and about 6% point loss, which was annoying, since Level 20 takes so long anyway.

But, unlike most people, I'm not going to rant and complain about how "unfair" it is. The simple fact of the matter is, I broke the rules, and I guess it's fair to say that I have to face the consequences. Even though, like a lot of people who have been modded lately, I didn't know the rules, that doesn't mean I'm exempt from them. So from now on I'm going to stay up to date with all of GS's ToS, to prevent myself from being modded again.

So, now that I'm back, you can expect to see more of me, and an episode of WotW tomorrow. I might also be starting an infrequent series of blogs about my views on games, life, the universe, and other big weighty subjects, like elephants. So be ready for some more serious writing from me

That's about all for now, so see you later. [insert amusing tagline here]

Word of the Week #2-3 F-I

Just a brief note before I begin, I'm changing the rules (again...). From now on, I will probably do more than one Quote of the Week, but sometimes I might not. And another thing, none of the rules apply unless I want them to.

Words of the Week:

francophobia- A fear of France or French people.

gigantomachia- A war of giants, originally from Greek mythology in which the giants fought the Olympian gods.

helot- (In Sparta) A serf or slave owned by the state, and sold along with the land they were bound to.

in flagrante delicto (latin)- In the act of commmitting an offence, similar to the phrase caught red-handed

Quotes of the Week:

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Theodore Geisel

"There's very little advice in men's magazines, because men don't think there's a lot they don't know. Women do. Women want to learn. Men think, 'I know what I'm doing, just show me somebody naked'." -Jerry Seinfeld

Man of the Week:

Theodore Geisel- Better known as Doctor Seuss. Even though his books are for children, people of all ages still enjoy them, both for their amusing characters and quirky rhyming attitude. He wrote and illustrated 44 childrens books, three of which (The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, and Horton Hears a Who) have been made into movies, and his best-selling book is Green Eggs and Ham. And to commemorate Dr. Seuss, the National Education Asscoiation (USA), celebrates March 2, Seuss' birthday, as Read Across America Day. If anyone wants to know, my personal favourite is Yertle the Turtle. What's yours?

Well that's it for this week, hopefully you enjoy it. I know I haven't been very active lately, I'll try to pick up my game, but it's difficult with school and everything. And one last thing, what do you guys think of my tagline? ("Keep grinnin'") Do you like it or think I should change it to something else? (I just don't want to do the whole- "majorflyswat, signing off" thing.)

So anyway, see you guys later, and keep grinnin'. :D
