Ever since I started working as a File Producer for Gamespot I've uploaded many demos, wallpapers, patches, and of course MODS! Now I was introduced to mods way back when Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 came out, when I was entrenched in an aggressive online battle with player IHATEBANANAS. For the first hour I was kicking ass, and my allied troops took over one of his bases and stole his technology. Soon after I started mixing factions and building up a massive army for battle, until a monkey parachuted down to into my base. My first reaction was to say, "Awwwwww how cute! Look at the monkey in the parachute." Then 50 more decided to drop in too! I was speechless, because I didn't know where they came from until player IHATEBANANAS sent me a message saying, "I hope you hate bananas like I do. Goodbye!" Then the 51 cute monkeys blew up into a toxic liquid engulfing my entire base and newly created super army. Within a couple minutes, IHATEBANANAS had taken over my base and aggressively introduced me to the mods.
This blog post will be dedicated to the four most anticipated mods for the first half of 2009. I say first half because I guarantee people come out with some sick ass mods after that period of time. But before I start I want to go over some of the terminology.
Mod = Modification of a PC game that can include new items, weapons to new buildings, missions and more.
Full Conversion = is a mod of an existing game that (usually) replaces almost all of the artistic assets in the original game, and sometimes core aspects of gameplay, in some cases creating a game in a completely different genre from the original.
Sandbox Tool = Is a Mod Tool that allows you to create your own world with the tools used to make the game you love.
And here we go...
MidEast Crisis 2 - Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Full Conversion
Developer: Isotx
www.isotx.com
I'm a huge Command & Conquer fan and have played them all, except for the black sheep Renegade, and ever since I was rudely introduced to mods I have always tweaked my version of the game. There are some beautiful conversions, maps and balance tweaks out there in the CnC mod world that bring new life to each game. MidEast Crisis 2 is one of those mods, but this is not just a mod for Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, but a full conversion of the game. MidEast Crisis 2 is set in the near-future in the middle-east. This FC (Full Conversion) includes three factions (UN Peacekeepers, IDF, Guardians of Islam) each with drastically different gameplay. Each of these new factions is impressive as they will satisfy all types of warfare if you're more of a turtle fighter and like to build up your base you go with the UN Peacekeepers, but if you like to spread out and get a bit dirty, you go with either the IDF or Guardians of Islam.
One great attribute to this mod is how the map is more involved in the war then usual CnC maps. Usually CnC maps have you capture hospitals, garages, miscellaneous buildings for your troops to garrison, but MidEast Crisis 2 takes it further. Almost the entire map has a function, where some factions take over buildings and towers to gain the upper hand and others take over gas stations and oil derricks to fuel their armies. This style of warfare plays a bit like Company of Heroes, but with a lot more interaction with your terrain.
The resource collecting in this mod moves away from just gathering Tiberium or some metal to fund your war. MEC 2 gives each faction a unique way to gather resources, from deploying reporters into the field and capturing the enemy in action to taking over Town Halls and Wireless Towers for additional resources. This system should give players new tactical abilities instead of the usual one resource method of past CnC's. For now this mod/total conversion is shaping up to be a great addition to the CnC mod world, as well as an excuse to dust the cob webs off of Tiberium wars. I'll keep you updated when video and the eventual release of the mod is available.
Back to the Future: Hill Valley - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Full Conversion
Developer: Back to the Future: Modding Team
www.bttfhillvalley.co.uk
When I first stumbled upon this Mod I was really excited, because I'm a huge Back to the Future fan. Back to the Future: Hill Valley is a full conversion mod where you get to experience key moments within the Back to the Future trilogy. This conversion includes the time machines from each film (such as, the time train from the third movie), as well as missions loosely based on Back to the Future Part I, time travel, time travel effects and graphics and more.
I tried this mod out about a month ago, and it was truly amazing how much is developed. There is a tutorial mode that shows you all the steps on how to time travel, right down to driving the Delorean from a remote control. Once you have the short tutorial down it's only a matter of time till you're on your way into a mission and running away from the Libyans. Now the first mission you're driving the BTTF I Delorean, and though I quickly wanted to get into flying, I first needed to learn how to time travel. After I completed the first mission, it was onto flying.
Flying the Delorean was a dream, and time traveling in the sky was too. When you time travel the classic flames shoot out as your disappear and the three white flashes appear when you come out of hyperspace. You can also drive and fly the train from BTTF III right off the bat. It's located at the top of the mansion from where you start off from. It's pretty fun to drive, and using the quick keys to tilt was great as the camera stayed stationary as I complete time travel like the way it happened at the end of BTTF III. All in all, the mod did have it share of bugs, but I'm sure they will be corrected with future releases. This mod reaffirms the fact that PC gaming will never die, because it will be resurrected by mods until the end of time.
Black Mesa - Half-Life 2 Full Conversion
Developer: Black Mesa Dev Team
www.blackmesasource.com
When I first started this list of anticipated mods I was looking at games that I had an addiction to, such as the Command & Conquer series, GTA, and a couple others. After completing the first list I had no other games outside of my addition, so I wiped my list clean and started again. I dug a bit deeper into the modding world and found Black Mesa. I remember watching a teaser trailer for this game awhile back, but I recently got a hold of the full trailer, which is amazing. Before I continue let me educate you on Black Mesa.
Black Mesa is a Full Conversion of Half-Life 2, but instead converting Half-Life 2 into a new game the developers recreated the original Half-Life with the HL2 Source Engine. The original cast and environments are all there, but with updated textures, rich environments, improved AI, and more. In addition to the obvious single-player mode Black Mesa will also offer a co-operative mode.
Black Mesa co-op will allow players to not only recruit the assistance of security guards and scientists, but also that of your friends! Share the single-player experience by battling through Black Mesa together. Players will be able to wage battles, travel corridors and emerge victorious over the enemies and escape the confines of the Black Mesa Research Facility.
I didn't play much of the original Half-Life not because I didn't like it, but because I was addicted to CnC Red Alert 2. But when the orange box came out I couldn't help, but immerse myself into the Hal-Life 2 world. Episode I and II were amazing, and this full conversion of Half-Life has me more excited than ever to play the original Half-Life. I will update you on the release date info when I receive it.
STARGATE SG-27 - Crysis Mod
Developer: Whirlwind Games
www.whirlwind-games.com
I've been a fan of Crysis ever since I started working here at Gamespot. I didn't have a good enough computer to run it at home, so I played a lot of it here at work, shhhh, just don't tell anyone. The suit was amazing, and once I figured out how to tweak it and become a God, I enjoyed beating it five times in a row. After the fifth time though, I was a bit burnt out from the experience. I set the game down for a bit to play some other stuff, but the gameplay and especially the suit kept me thinking about the game all of the time. Once again, I did some digging and found that Crysis had tons of mods already made and fully functional. These mods mostly consisted of single-player maps, but that was enough. There were some that got creative by designing bigger or smaller islands, some that had you parachute into battle, and some that gave you the famous nuke gun to terrorize all of the aliens on the island. All in all there is a rich mod community behind Crysis, which is why I included STARGATE SG-27.
STARGATE SG-27 is a single-player mod for Crysis, which usually translates to a single-player map, following a storyline from the STARGATE world. Crysis mods usually aren't full conversion of the game, but instead rich and elaborate single-player maps that come near it.
STARGATE SG-27 is a single player modification for Crysis that aims to drop players right into the heart of intergalactic conflict, with a tactical combat based gameplay. Players will be apart of SG-27, an elite special-ops combat unit which is dispatched to deal with hostile situations on various off world locations that require the unique tactical experience of an elite military special op teams. A variety of the finest weapons from Earth's arsenal fitting different situations, as well as a variety of alien weaponry will be available to use.
The concept art looks amazing as well as the recently released weapons concept art. The team at Whirlwind Games is taking what normal mods accomplish and taking it ten steps further, by making you forget that there was even a Crysis world. This team is really flexing the Crysis Sandbox, and I am eagerly anticipating this mod.

When news articles claim that PC gaming is dead I just laugh in their faces, and download more mods. Think about how much more valuable your game becomes when you play them with a Full Conversion mod. You get a whole new experience that console gaming, can never achieve. Console games have such a short shelf life that it's easy to forget great games like BioShock, Halo 3, and MGS 4, after you've beaten them. I'm not here to bash console gaming, but I believe mods really don't get the recognition they deserve. So, it's time to dust off your old PC games and realize that they have multiple lives after you've beaten them. VIVA MODS!
