Racism existed the first time humans met other humans that weren't from their tribe/clan/etc. You Tube/GameSpot/MySpace is merely the modern method of humanity hating humans that aren't the same.

What we need is a gigantic Human-Eating predator to populate the lands of earth once again, so we can remember in our egocentricity how stupidly mundane humans become when we don't have something else to hate.

We're all killers and freaks to nature perhaps.

Our worst enemy is our own cynicism. Humans might be a freak to mother nature -kind of like the probability that Earth managed to sustain life in the first place. We wouldn't be so egomaniacal if we didn't manage to conrol so much around us. Interesting that Nature created a species which can actually destroy nature. Nature isn't narcissistic. Why is humanity?

Um. Obama isn't alllowed to just go and change things cuz he wants to. The citizens are the ones who have that right with a majority ruling vote. If he tires to make up stuff without our consent first- see 'gun control thread'. Obama the smoker-see 'smoking ban' thread, etc.

how come the only threads which go for pages here are usually 'chicken or the egg' ones?

I don't think the US should be able to sell the types of guns you can buy and the system of buying them defiantly should be changed. In the UK to get a gun you have to go through a lot of police procedures and you need a clean record too, and for every type of gun you want, you have to get another license.

dan-rofl-copter

Agreed on the some control of guns. (I am pro-gun, though) Here's one problem with anti-gun control groups, - We realize 2nd amendment was put there to so farmer Joe could feed his family in the wilderness of our younger nation. We also know it was put there to keep armies guessing twice about invading us-I have an ancestor who was a Minuteman (citizen militia), or to keepa "potentially despotic government" (written in the Declaration Of Independence) from becoming another monarchylikethe onewe wanted to be freedfrom. Sowhen our government seeks to disarm us-we get a little upset- so much so, that we believe ANY legislation about controlling private guns is going to eventually go bad for the gun owner.

This cynicism may be un-founded, but those who want to disarm us, know for certain we are going to be watching their attempts. It will be very difficult to even limit the amount/type of guns we'll own. But it will never be less than one per citizen, they now understand.

After reading this thread, I was unsure if I should inject some sensibility into it, but no one will pay attention to what I have to say anyway, so I'll have a go...

I'll end with a quote by George Orwell:

"That rifle hanging on the wall of the working-class flat or the labourer's cottage is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there."

VoodooGamer

This part hasn't been mentioned enough. The colonists were getting 'gang-banged' by King George 3. (not your fault, in modern UK) We still remember that. What if Poland, France etc. had common-man firearms more available, or if the Jewish population of the time was gun toting? How quickly would the devastation of the Blitzkreig gone through then? This I think is more to the point of gun ownership in USA. We are supposed to hold our government accountable to us, and many in USA are a little worried about the power our Federal Branch is gaining.

Now I'm not about to scream "revolution" and start popping off government people, but I want to be darn sure they know I won't just give up to some dictator's whim.

pfft the last people in the world that should have their own guns are americans...and I can prove it.

All you have to do is register. You aren't trained how to use it, you aren't expected to know how to use it either - just to be able to fill out a form and wait three days...

in the UK we call that being off your trolley...

Regardless, aperson entering your home does not mean youshould get away with using a firearm...the law says use justifiable force...a gun is not justifiable unless it was in your hand or in the room...if you went into adifferent room to get the weapon then it is pre meditated and you should go down for life.

Now that is not necessarily what I believe, but it is how British law works, our laws have been modifiedby the US to construct your own lawswhich unfortunately contradictso much just for the sake of an amendment

seriousley

Cool to hear from someone in the UK. How many of us take this now common ability for granted I often wonder? I realize you feel we are "off our trolley" in the United States where this is concerned. Hope you are thankful the issue is not one of your nation's concern too! But it is an USA issue, afterall. I would like to hear if the UK generally thinks Americans are all trigger-happy?

We don't need guns here.

Papitar

I like this one. It is the actual point, I'd say. When humanity decides their worst enemy ISN'T each other, we'll see an end to this whole topic.

I believe that Papitar here said they were Norwegian in another post. A countryman to Papitar in this same thread also brought this point up. Maybe if my USA was snowbound more often, we'd stop worrying about the 'bad guys' stealing our stuff- because we'd all be more worried about simply freezing to death! Nothing like a blizzard to make all humans feel more together. Our last time we ever really grouped as humans in history was probably when everyone of us was more worried about getting eaten by saber-tooth tigers, freezing in the ice age, or getting trampled by a rampaging wooly mammoth!

Oh how nice it'd be for that 'Human vs Nature' simplicity to return. Instead of 'Human vs Human Nature', like we have today.
