the switch from cd to dvd in the pc gaming industry came pretty fast if you ask me

so why would the swicth from dvd to blu ray come slower? the only reason i can think of is microsoft boycotting blu ray on pc to support its plans to merge the online gaming of xbox and pc (talking about "windows live")

sambalimbo

Lol PC games being stored on blu ray disk in the near future would be a joke! The reason for this has being posted throughout this thread...

Now that I think about it, it's sad with all of that money being thrown around to slightly extend the lenght of a game when it could have gone to such a better cause in the world.Baird-06

Slightly? did you read TCs post?

Blu-Ray allows for higher quality, uncompressed high res textures. This improves the visuals significantly. Blu-Ray is going to be needed for games, that is pretty much a certainty.raynimrod

no not really, putting into consideration that there is only 512mb of memory for the game to be stored in, blu ray will not significantly increase texture quality, if storage capacity was all that had to do with texture resolution then games on my PC would have super high res textures since its on a 320gig HDD, but unfortunately that's not true, the only real advantage to blu ray is compression isnt always needed, and possibly longer games in some situations. Blu ray should never be needed for PC gaming because they can be highly compressed since they don't run of the disk so the CPU doesn't need to de-compress the textures on the fly. Why do you think games like COD4 don't even run in HD on consoles? Its not even a hardware demanding game! This directly relates to consoles lack of ram were even the magical blu ray disk that can supposedly " improves the visuals significantly" because it "allows for higher quality, uncompressed high res textures" cant change.
