Then don't, take my comp for example, its not top of the line in every aspect but its capable of alot more than any console, can max out more or less every game (apart from crysis obviously) and it didn't cost me much. This is also from scratch, no re-used parts like case or psu.

Motherboard -Asus M2N-VM DH: $147.50

CPU -AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (OCed to 2.4ghz): $81.33

RAM - 2X Apacer 1GB DDR2-800: $69.34

PSU -Corsair 550W VX PSU: $171.39

This is all in NZ dollars but converting it to US dollars it is far less than $2000, this doesn't count keyboard and mouse, monitor or anything like that but I'm sure everyone has a spare one of those and maybe even a PSU, RAM, and DVD drive they can use again, if you have a decent mobo all you may need is to buy a new graphics card and some more ram, ether way your not spending over $2000....
