The question isn't even whether Sony will support it decently or not. It may be cheaper than Vive or the Rift, but VR is very demanding and by cutting corners on this type of product, you make it stillborn. As I sometimes say about cheap, shitty and disposable products : I'm not rich enough to buy them. It's a wiser economic choice imho to pay a bit more upfront, if that means you actually get something that's usable and satisfying down the line.
Sony's PS4 may be the most powerful present-gen console, it still is quite weak spec wise. They will either offer VR with Wii graphics, or decent graphics with shitty performance and severely limited gameplay.
It doesn't help that the sort of games that benefit the most from VR (sims) are mostly absent from consoles (or heavily casualized). So the players who need it the most are already getting a better version on PC.
So there you go : as a VR product, it is too weak and will fast become obsolete compared with the competition. As a fad for casual players, it could have worked... But it's still too expensive for that.
Tl;dr : Sony have a marketing problem. They aren't appealing to the wealthy/passionate demographic that wants good VR, and are too expensive for the curious amateur (those people will be content with McDonalds VR goggles).
