It depends what you mean by “saved”. The series would still exist today if it hadn't gone the RE4 direction, but it would have been more of a side project. I think it would have gone more or less the same way as Silent Hill, i.e. not “dead”, but not exactly bursting with life either, and definitely not a big seller.
But if you think the series would be doing just as well in 2023, with dead camera and tank controls, you're trying to delude yourself. There simply isn't a market for it, and the evidence for that fact is everywhere.
Arkane makes good games. Often really, really good games. The fact that this one was such a disaster, tells me that they were probably pushed into doing something they, a) didn't have much experience in, b) didn't really want to do in the first place, and c) probably weren't given the necessary time and/or resources for, especially when you see a lot of bugs from a dev that doesn't have a reputation for bugs.
Publishers often like to hide in the background and push blame onto devs, and make them sign NDA's so they can't talk about what really happened, but the publisher is half of every game. We all read how psychopathic Marty Stratton was towards Mick Gordon on Doom Eternal.
Phil is apologising here, but if you look at what he's apologsing for, he says his crime is that he “didn't step in to help Arkane sooner”.
I bet if you had a project lead from Arkane openly speak his mind you'd learn that the timeliness of the assistance from Microsoft/Xbox, was the least of their pressures.
Loved the first film, I already had a high standard for films I'll actually invest the 2-3 hours in that it takes to watch, but that film raised the bar yet again, to the point where I have only bothered watching like 3 films since the first one came out. Everything else felt like garbage for like a year afterwards.
I was starting to wonder if it wasn't simply impossible to make a good film out of Dune in a way that does it justice but Villeneuve really knocked it out of the park. I can't wait to see the next one. It's so rare I actually get to say that and mean it.
The mods for this game on PC are kind of what saved it for me. While I think the vanilla game is a 9/10 and an incredible piece of work, once I played it with certain tiny mods, I feel like the full potential of the game was unlocked, and I couldn't go back.
For example: “No recoil” “No aiming zoom” “No crosshair bloom spread” “Simple FOV for RE4 Remake”
Then if you want you can add mods like, “Headshots stagger” which work great but do throw off the balance to a large degree. But as for the 4 above, it's just a night-and-day difference and the combat feels like a dance again, like the original but faster and smoother.
How can you not like Keanu Reeves? He's the kung-fu protagonist of maybe the coolest movie ever made (The Matrix) on top of being the coolest three Johns in media, Constantine, Wick, and Silverhand, and he's the founder of his own motorcycle company, and he's an actual rock star. And as if that wasn't enough he's also the nicest guy you'll ever meet, with the most tragic backstory you can imagine.
It's hard to believe Keanu Reeves is even real at times. That he's probably sitting on a couch somewhere at this very moment, reading Shakespeare while you're reading this comment.
