If you're truly unlucky and you build it right before a next generation of parts is released (new architecture) it may very well be obsolete within a month... the pc market moves a hell of a lot faster than the console market.

Interested myself... lets go low - mid end, yet being able to perform. (note i'm taking the lowest prices i've seen)

Psu roughly 80$
Mobo 60$
Cpu 150$
GFX 180$
Hdd 100$
Control, lets take 80$ for this.

Case (if we're going small form factor 100$ at least)
Memory 50$

800$ and i'm pretty sure i've missed something...

And this is for low-mid (Aka running the same if slightly better than a new console)

Expect to drop anywhere between 1200 and 2000$ for a high end machine.
