[QUOTE="subrosian"][QUOTE="Giancar"]The Sony online service will be amazing....I can't wait to the PSHome beta.... I also agree, where's the HD DVD built in???? or WI FI?subrosian

where is the wifi in the $500 PS3?

Okay forget that, for $20 you can get a NExt Generation Format Player...that's awesome. For another $50, you hcan have upgrade that $500 PS3's HDD to 200gigs if you wanted(Not neededuntil Sony has a better service. For gaming 20gigs is just fine, i have a 360 after all for over a year now. 20gigs fine for gamers.)

In the end, the Elite shows consumers that the PS3 is a value, and I don't hate the PS3 as much as I used to do to M$ forgetting to put in HDDVD or Bluray Playback.

$50 for a 200gb laptop hard drive? Oh really? Newegg having a good special or something? I don't want a next gen movie player, I want a game system that's proven it's going to provide hit games, along with a proven online service. At this point I've come to the conclusion that this generation is going to hurt my wallet no matter what I do - so I'm keen on just getting one console and sticking with it. The PS3 does not give me any confidence in its ability to get exclusive games I can actually care about. Instead I keep getting told to "wait" and "be patient" - I've been patient for Elite, how much longer must I wait for this generation to start? Seriously - congrats, you can watch casino royale (excellent movie) over and over again on Blu-Ray, that's great for you, but it's not what I want to do. I want to pretend I'm in Ghost in the Shell while I play GRAW and GRAW 2 like an obsessed loon, I want to play four hour stints of Halo 3 at one in the morning, I want to pilot a MIG in high speed combat in Ace Combat 6 - I want to be a 1000 year old cursed man in Lost Odyssey - I want GAMES and Microsoft seems to be the only person out there right now who gets that. You make some very good points. As of now, thats one of the only things keeping me from switching over to the PS3. This gen I will only be owing one system because of money constraints. For me, I want a system that plays great games and it also a multimedia powerhouse. I love watching high Def movies on my xbox360 HD-DVD drive. It just looks amazing. However, its looking like Blue Ray is going to win out. Furthermore, the PS3 with built in Blue Ray is only 20 bucks more than the xbox360 Elite. It also comes with standard HDMI, blue tooth and other pretty cool featurs. Like I said, I will give it another year to see how things play out. But if Sony can deliver on some really cool games and on online service thats close to xboxlive, I think I will be switching to the PS3. After some serious thought, I've just come to the conlusion that the PS3 was better thought out and planned for the future needs of gamers as well as multimedia buffs such as myself. Who knows how many more times MS will revampe the xbox360 and release a "new and better" version. Makes me nervous. I'm just starting to lose some confidence in MS and the xbox360. I sure will miss Halo!!! Sony and Nintendo have taken to offering "diversions" which is fine and dandy, but it's not my thing. I'm not whatever audience is entertained by playing a graphically-enhanced modifiable platformer with my friends, it's not me.

anyone who is not an blind fanboy realizes ps3 is a better value then the xbox 360.InfamousC
Before the Elite was anounced I was convinced that the xbox360 was a better value. It was a lot cheaper. Now that MS is releasing an Elite version with no next gen video format, the PS3 is looking like a much better deal. For 20 bucks more I can get a blueRay player (which is looking more and more like the nect gen format winner). I really think this is going to back fire on MS. In my mind, this is a really bad move. My brother and a few of his friends, who were planning on getting the xbox360 are not thinking about getting the PS3 instead. All of this because of the xbox360 elite. They read the news about this new version of the xbox360 on cnn.com.

The Elite is what made me want a 360 over a PS3. It's everything I could want in a game system. The PS3 isn't a value for me - it lacks games in a way that is simply unbeliveable. I've already waited a year and a half to get a system, I'm not going to spend another year being miserable while I wait for a game that appeals to me to come out on the PS3.

And seriously - you're not lemmings, enough. ddldave, c'mon man, MGS4 icon and sig *shakes head*

Check my past posts, I have been more critical of Sony and the PS3 than most in these forums. I just think that MS really made a mistake with the Elite. Its making people like me, who would have never even dreamed about ever getting a PS3, more tempted to do so. It makes the PS3 not look like that bad of a deal.

I own a xbox360 and only a xbox360. I'm a huge fan of MS and have been nothing but critical of Sony and the PS3 in the past. However, after much consideration, I've come to the conclusion that the PS3 is a better value than the xbox360 Elite. With a built in high def BlueRay player,  built in WiFi, memory card slot readers, multiple usb ports and built in blue tooth, standard HDMI, the PS3 is packed with features. With my xbox360, I have the WiFi adapter, the HD-DVD drive and the charge kit.

So, as you can see I like to watch high def movies with my xbox360 on my panasonic high def TV. Some of you may not be interested in watching High def movies but I am. Furthermore, as of right now it looks like BlueRay is going to win the format war. So in my oppinion, for me and my interests, the PS3 is a better value.

Does that mean I'm going to go out and purchase the PS3 right now? Wrong! I'm going to give it a year or so more to see how things play out. I never thought I would ever say this but I'm very tempted to switch over to the PS3. The only real thing keeping me with MS and the xbox360 is that 1) I already own a xbox360 and dont want to spend more money on the PS3 right now, 2) xboxlive is amazing, 3) Halo 3.

If Sony can some how get there online service to be on par or evern somewhat close to that of xboxlive and there is a price drop in the somewhat near future, I may be VERY VERY tempted to switch over. I would have never dreamed about doing this until the Elite was anounced.

It's just that the more I think about it and the more I think about what I want in a console and what I will be using the console for, the PS3 is starting to look more of a better value and more future proof than what the xbox360 currently offers. It also maked me kinda nervous that MS is always looking to change and revise the xbox360. I dont want to keep buying the system and then finding out later there is going to be a better version that is going to be released. I dont think that will happen to the PS3 on such a scale. I will give it another year to see how things play out. For now I will continue to use my xbox360.

I had ZERO plans of getting the playstation 3 because I thought it was a rip off. I was happy with the xbox360 premium and thought it was a good deal. Now that MS is releasing the elite, the playstation 3 doesnt sound that bad of a deal to me. I think MS made a mistake by making people like me, who would never have considered getting a PS3, now start thinking about it. The only thing thats keeping me with MS at this point is XboxLive and Halo 3.

If PS3 can some how deliver a really cool online sevice somewhat on the level of xboxlive in the near future, I may switch over. If any of you think I'm a fake fanboy, just look at my past posts. I've been more critical of SOny and the PS3 than most people in these forums. I was commited to never owning a PS3 and have never owned a Sony console ever in my life. This has changed due to what in my oppinion is MS making a big mistake with the xbox360 elite.

Archx1

Well get a PS3 then, you deserve one, 600$ for 60GB less HDD, when 360 elite gets you 120GB HDD at ...480$

Who cares.  The PS3 offers a built in BR-Player, Built in Wi-fi and built in cardslots.  The PS3 simply gives you way more bang for your buck.

I agree. I really think MS is making a really big mistake. I think in the long run the PS3 is a better deal. I just hope that they can deliver on good games and a good online service. When there is a price drop on the PS3, I will sell my xbox360 and get the PS3. It just seems to be a better deal for the long run. I love watching high def movies on my HDTV. Looks like like blueRay is going to win out so I think PS3 is the way to go for the future. I never thought I would ever even consider getting a PS3. Oh well. Heres to change!

So the premium system was a good deal before the elite was released, but isn't anymore? The premium hasn't changed, good logic.

Never said that. I'm just saying that that for a small amount of more money, I could get the PS3 which has built in WIFI, a blueray player(which looks to be the next gen format winner) and a built in HD. If Sony could just get the online aspect working the right way, I may be VERY tempted to get the PS3. Recently, I have started thinking that they more be more commited to future proofing there system thatn MS is.

Hell.. even the people on the official xbox.com forums are pissed off at MS right now. The only people that arent pissed off are the lemmings trying to spin this into a good thing(which it isnt..)

I'm a lemming and I think its a VERY BIG mistake that MS is making. Makes me think the PS3 is such a bad idea. If Sony can come up with a service that is as good as LIVE. I would be VERY tempted to switch on over.

Sorry, I ment to say isnt such a bad deal.

[QUOTE="a_random_hobo"]

I think Sony's strategy is to divert its resources towards in-house development of games rather than depending on 3rd party games like in the past, and to ensure Blu-Ray is THE next gen film format of choice. Here's the reasons why:

1) Quietly over the years, Sony has acquired many small developers, and I believe they are now the third largest game publisher behind EA and Ubisoft in terms of sheer manpower. All signs point to huge investment on 1st party games here.

2) Sony is, as we know, in a bit of financial trouble. It can't afford to buy exclusive rights to games or even time exclusives for that matter. Well, I take that back. It could, but I believe that they are looking for more long-term strategies than buying exclusivity rights all the time. AFAIK, Sony has never really purchased exclusive rights to most of its past 3rd party games, they just happened to develop them for the PS1/PS2 only due to the fact that they dominated and it was cost effective to just develop it for those systems thanks to the huge installed base.

3) Kind of a continuation of 2, there is more competition now. I think Sony realizes that the phenomenal success and dominance they've enjoyed in the past simply won't continue, especially with the 800 pound Gorilla that is MS having entered the market. And common sense would suggest that you don't wrestle head to head with a gorilla. Sony COULD buy 3rd party developers out to make games for their system, but that is Microsoft's game. MS is (in)famous for simply buying its way into dominance and killing its competitors that way. I don't believe that Sony, while it is a large company, would be able to beat MS at their own game. I think Sony sees this too.

4) Blu-Ray is a HUGE investment on Sony's part, and I think at this moment it is more important for Sony to declare victory in the next-gen format wars. You have to realize that Sony is a conglomerate, and its electronics department in particular is STRUGGLING. They NEED Blu-Ray to win in order to gain ground again. Say what you will, but it was in Sony's best interest to include the BD drive in the PS3. This way Sony will pretty much ensure that Blu-Ray will win sooner or later.

I think that Sony is predicting that the rest will fall in place from here. Being the sole provider of a next-gen movie format in a console along with guaranteed exclusive games through its own developers (which is more cost-effective in the long run) will (possibly) put Sony in a good to great position in the future. After manufacturing methods are refined and costs are reduced on the new technology inside the PS3, Sony will eventually lower the price. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

A lot of people here ridicule Sony, but the company isn't ran by a bunch of monkeys. They have a strategy, and they are hoping it will work out for them. I for one think it's a pretty reasonable one. The other path, of course, would have been to get into a price and bid war with Microsoft, and while Sony can do that, I don't think they'd beat MS at their own game like I stated earlier. Nintendo's strategy has been super-succesful so far,as it has basically set itself in another league thanks to pricing and innovation. Sony is the one in MS's crosshairs right now, and hopefully their strategy to continue their success works out for them, although it may take a year or two to notice the benefits.

If Sony can "survive" (i.e. continue to sell at a stable rate) for a year or two and not have to resort to price wars and bid wars, it will be in a VERY good position. That is the critical unknown IMO.

That's my two cents.... now for the fanboys to rush in and scream "lmalmalma Wall of text Sony is teh suck lolz", but intelligent input is always welcome as well!

This is the best post I have read as of this entire year. Congratulations. Everyone in this thread is now smarter.

To be honest with all of you,I used to me a lemming. I used to want Sony and Nintendo both to fail and for MS to dominate. Although I still want MS to do well and I only own a xbox360 and dont have the money, time or energy in owning any of the other systems, I've recently stopped caring who wins. It just takes way to much energy to follow up on whos winning the war and to hate on the other systems. As of right now, I hope that all 3 systems do well and that everyone can be happy. The more I look and think about it, the more I can the see positives and negatives in all 3 systems and companies. My love for video games have started to become something I never thought they would be, A Chore. I play my xbox360 every now and then but am starting to lose interest in it and system wars in general. Video games have turned into a fan boy driven business and its getting old. I applaud the creator of this post for writting something thats very well thought out and un-biased. Good for you.
