Case sucks, SSD sucks, and you should get MSI or Gigabyte gpu.

jakes456
Anandtech said the SSD set a new standard for its pricepoint particularly based on its components and called it pretty good overall. I think I'll trust them.... The case appears to be highly regarded, again particularly at its pricepoint (MSRP, not the steal I got it for). Haven't heard anything bad about Sapphire before and its a good $40 or so less after you take the rebate into account....

I'd get a better\bigger case Had the 300 and it feels small and cable management is quite hard to doMonsieurX

Yeah, I'm contemplating using the 300 for the HTPC (my old components) and using the old case (can't remember what it is, but it's really nice) for the new build. The deal on the 300 was just too good to pass up to me for at least one of those uses.

Figured RAM is cheap and it allows me to multitask better. I tend to use 2 monitors with multiple things a lot (eg: watching Netflix while playing WoW). My goal is for this PC to last me a long while like the last one did (which is really starting to show it's age even with some OCing).

I agree that I rarely use the optical drive, however I have about 500+ blu rays that I will want to rip to a bunch of drives for a media server at some point in the near future so I need a blu drive (including one that can handle 3D). That's honestly the point of picking up the blu drive, and I'll probably just toss my current DVD-RW into the new machine.

Since we've hit a point where it seems like nothing major seems to be coming down the pipeline and my current PC is hitting 6-7 years old, I think it's time to build myself a new one. My budget is in the $1000ish range with no need for a monitor and plan on using my old hard drives (though adding an SSD). Here's what I'm looking at currently, anything ya'll would change or reconsider? I would like for my PC to handle top end games again like it used to. I think my old PC will become an HTPC so will add a bunch of high TB disks at a later date.

Case: Antec 300 $40-$15 rebate --- already bought since the deal was expiring and sounded too good http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

PSU: Corsair 750TX $90 -$25 rebate ---already bought since the deal was expiring and sounded too good http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Quad-Core Processor 3.4 GHz 4 Core LGA 1155 - BX80637I53570K$220

Cooler:Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan (RR-212E-20PK-R2)$30

GPU: Sapphire 7950 $300 - $20 rebate and with FarCry 3, Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs (was gonna pick up 2/3 of those anyway, so DEAL!)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202006

MB:Asus P8Z77-V LK Intel Z77 DDR3 LGA 1155 Motherboards$130

RAM:Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory (CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10)$80

SSD:Samsung Electronics Samsung 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 120 sata_6_0_gb 2.5-Inch MZ-7TD120BW$100

Drive:LG Electronics UH12LS29;BLACK/BULK Internal SATA 12x Super Multi DVD Blue with 3D Playback $58

Total: $998

The Amazon items were the same price as at Newegg except I don't have to deal with rebates, tax or shipping (Prime member). The case, PSU and GPU are all at Newegg and cheaper or too good a deal

Anything else? Anything to be changed? I feel it is pretty solid and brings me in at a good number. Just wondering if I should wait til Black Friday for the remaining parts...

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"]@Byshop: thanks for the info. I'll look into that Samsung but I've had bad experiences with them before so a bit cautious. @John: I used both surface keyboards and they are fine. The thing is one of them is touch so people aren't used to that and think its bad. @Nosferatu: thanks for the review. Is there any chance U could test if Farmville 2 works on the Surface? I can't seem to get an answer anywhere.

I don't do Facebook (find it weird and creepy) so I can't test it, but my assumption is that the games are probably flash or java based and would therefore work just fine. The touch keyboard takes about 10-15 mins to get used to and you will probably never be as efficient on it as a normal keyboard since you can feel your way through it and there is no tactile feedback that a key is pressed. HOWEVER, you can get very close to your max typing speed after a short amount of usage. I am able to write notes while talking to people without a problem whatsoever and keep pace. I find myself watching my typing a little bit more than usual, but that's not a huge deal breaker.

I picked up a Surface RT mostly for the reasons Felipe was thinking of one (though mine have some work implications). Our electronic medical record is Explorer based and so Chrome and Safari work OK, but have some definite compatibility issues with it (I've tried both of the other tablet formats and own a day 1 release Xoom). I have been VERY happy with my Surface so far. I does everything I want it to (though Flash on some websites only works through the desktop version of IE) and it handles it well. There are some apps I am "missing", but they will come.

My 1 complaint is that my original surface had a weird hardware occurrence where the magnets were strong enough that when I pulled off the keyboard it ripped the magnets from the tablet itself and took a lining of the tablet with it. They replaced it no hassle. I'm used to being an early adopter and there being issues so it's not a huge deal (so long as it doesn't happen again).

The difference between a Surface and the other tablets is that I feel it mostly lives up to its desire to be for both work and play whilst the other 2 excel in just play. Yes, at the moment you are mostly getting it for its interface and a fancy accessory (the keyboard), but I think it has the most potential of the 3 main platforms out at the moment.

The first bit of the opening showing the children in their "pods" made me go "Hmmm, 343 decided to do some live action on this one huh?" And then it showed Halsey which made me question whether it was CGI for a bit. Yes, it is, but they did a stunning job with that opening cutscene. That uncanny valley is hard to bridge, but I feel as though they successfully did so at the beginning.

Now, I've avoided watching stuff like the clips they released beforehand, so perhaps those exposed that hand already, but I was thoroughly impressed and it sets a nice standard for the rest of the game.

Nice pics and all...but ^

So you would have been happier if I'd said "I like taking pictures at the zoo, how bout you?" to make a discussion obvious instead? Sometimes people share things they've done as a form of conversation, who knew right?!

That reminds me of a Hitchcock movie I once saw.Treflis
Haha... sadly almost every kid had the same type of reaction. Took me forever to get some shots with smiles.

I went to the Nashville Zoo today and took about 200 pics. I kept about 85 of them cause they were either fun or I really liked the compositions. These are probably my favorites of the set though.

Rest of the pics are here: www.flickr.com/photos/averhoeven
