I'm as dark and gritty as it gets, way darker than you, Mr. "I won't kill anybody, even Joker, no matter how many times he escapes and goes on a murderous rampage."

Batman: No! That's some other Batman! I'm the Super-Dark-And-Gritty-Knight! I want to see you bleed! Bleeeeeeeed! I'd give Frank Miller's Batman nightmares. See, I'm still way darker and grittier than you could ever be.

Doomsday: Face me, heroes. I am a darker, grittier version of the villain from the last movie. Cower before my darkness and grittiness, which no hero can match!

Lex Luthor: Y'know, everybody in this movie is so dark and gritty, I need to inject some light-hearted, humorous villainy into the mix. Just call me 'Lex Joker'.

Joker: No! I'm not showing up until Suicide Squad, and I am the darkest and grittiest Joker ever created! Heath Ledger's got nothin' on me. Check out these sick tats! Sooo dark and gritty, amiright?

Between "Days of Future Past"/"Last Stand" and now "Deadpool"/"Wolverine Origins", I doubt any franchise has ever gotten so much mileage out of milking hatred for its worst predecessors.
