Hello!

I've encountered a problem with my PS3, I've never had any issues with it and it was working fine this morning. I hadn't touched it since, then just now when I switched it on there was no picture or sound on the TV. I checked the HDMI connection and it seemed fine, so I switched off the console, switched it back on again and still no picture or sound. So after rooting around for troubleshooting article on the interweb I reconnected it using the stock SCART cable it was supplied with, reset the console by holding down the power button for 10 seconds or whatever and it works fine. I tried to set it up for HDMI again but still, no picture or sound.

From this I came to the conclusion that the problem lies with the HDMI cable, however I'm a little paranoid of it being a more serious problem with the console, and I'd rather not have to purchase a new cable if I've got a perfectly decent one here.

I don't understand why this has suddenly happened. I've never had any problems with my console, and I'm always careful to switch it to standby before using the power switch at the back. I've got 40Gb console, with the HDD swapped out for a Western Digital 320Gb HDD, but I installed the new drive months ago and so far it has worked fine, so I can't imagine it being something to do with that. The HDMI cable that I was using I bought with the console from GAME, its GAME's own brand cable but again, its never caused me any problems until now.

To me it would seem that the issue is with the HDMI cable, as I said when I ran it through the SCART lead that came with the console it was fine.

Has anyone else had similar problems, and do I just need to buy a new HDMI cable? I hope its not a hardware problem with the console, that would upset me!

Thanks for any help,

Fletch x

I love the sunlight effects in Far Cry 2... nothing more beautiful than watching the sun setting over the African savannah and seeing the individual rays of light shining between the leaves of a tree!

Bioshock.

And its not coming out til I've got all the trophies! Either that or when Farcry 2 comes out!

Sheena321

Same, but for me it's not coming out til Fallout 3 comes out.

Haha yeah, I don't think I've been as impressed with a game for a long time. Trying to play through the game on Survivor with the vita-chambers disabled so I can get the 'I Chose The Impossible' trophy, but it's so insanely hard! I can't defeat the first Big Daddy, he can kill you in one blow!

@ Taoia:

Hahaha its actually pretty funny! I've actually got nothing except game install data and save games (and its not even excessive!) and I've now got less than 500Mb of space left! It's good that Sony expected this to happen, and provided everyone with a pretty simple way to switch out the HDD for a larger one.

@ paddycat1243:

I got a Western Digital Scorpio 320G HDD. There's some pretty good articles on the web (one on Gamespot here included) and as far as I am aware you can use any notebook HDD provided it's 2.5 inch SATA.

Interestingly when I went on Amazon to order mine I was choosing between the 320Gb WD Scorpio and a smaller one (260Gb I think), with both of them the most common products bought at the same time were PS3s and accessories, and I'm sure I even saw deals where they bundled the HDD in with the PS3 so they seem to be a pretty popular choice. Prices aren't to bad either, for about £60 I got the 320Gb HDD and an enclosure so I can keep my 40Gb as an external storage device for my music and videos.

@ everyone:

Thanks for the help guys! What I'll do is later today is get a decent sized memory stick, then I can just use the system backup function to backup my saved games. Should I just go ahead and delete everything I don't want to keep before I back it all up, to save space? I only really wanted to keep my saves anyways.

Also blueblur87 does this mean I'll have to, for example, download the CoD4 map pack again, but it won't charge me for it?

Cheers guys,

Fletch x

Hello!

I've currently got a 40Gb PS3, with about eleven games and unfortunately I've found that I've ran out of storage space very quickly! I've only got game data and saves (removed all my trailers and demos) and I've got less than 500Mb of space left!

To this end I've just ordered a 320Gb Western Digital HDD to replace my clearly inadequate 40Gb stock drive, along with an enclosure for the old 40Gb so I can keep it as an external, but I've got a few questions about backing up my saved data.

With almost 40Gb of saved data that I would like to keep, I was wondering if it would be possible to:

1). Transfer all of my save data accross to the 320Gb BEFORE installing it, and then installing it and using it like that.

or

2). Install the 320Gb, and use the 40Gb as an external storage device. After installing the 320Gb in my PS3, transfer all my game data from my now external 40Gb to the new internal 320Gb.

Thanks for any help!
