@SingletreeAve: I agree with you. Writing has never been the strong point in Far Cry series. Although, I think if you don't take it on face value and enjoy it more for the campiness and see the humour in it - it can be enjoyable on that level. The stories in all of the games have been pretty silly and it could be our fault as the audience for trying to take the stories too seriously.
But anyway, I agree the gameplay in the far cry series is always what has drawn me- they are super fun. The emergent mayhem is the big draw, and the adding of co-op in the modern far crys has really made it even more fun. I had loads of fun playing Fc5 coop.
@themightyimp2: Haha, no it wasn't meant to be an insult at all! I was teasing myself along with you- I was saying that I wrote that comment pretty late and I think I was trying to be funny... but have no idea what 'mouse dance' is either. Let's just forget the whole thing happened. :)
@Fallenlords69: Yeah, I do see what you're saying, you're right. I think I kind of misunderstood your intentions behind your initial message, so I apologize if my reply/tone came off as overly preachy or snarky.
And actually, I wasn't exactly correct myself, I think they did intend for this game to be exclusive to the PS4 and PC originally, which were both released simultaneously- without REALLY being a "sony exclusive". What I mean, is that they made the decision to do the limited release (probably for cost reasons), and it had nothing to do with any exclusive deal with sony. Hopefully that makes sense.
@oscardayus: @GameSpot Okay, so I owe you a bit of an apology for writing my comment to you before I read the entire article. I never read far enough to see that this was intending to be advertising your new video show, so that's on me.
While I see that your intentions are from a positive place, I still do stand behind my original response expressing my disappointment over this article and show concept. Full disclosure, I haven't watched the video- but I've read your entire article and understand what you're doing. I'm sure the video is funny, but I really think gamespot should really reconsider the direction and tone of content like this.
@Tidemoo: These types of comments/information is why I typically go on a self imposed media blackout for any game that I'm really interested in. I actually consider this a major spoiler for this game, and it really sucks that gaming journalism wasn't more intelligent about the way they handled this development in the game. It was never really a game mechanic, and was much more just an aspect of the games narrative/story experience, and had the media not ruined this element immediately I think this idea (which is really pretty awesome/brilliant) would of really added quit a lot to peoples gaming experience.
Journalists/people immediately blasted all over the internet about this saying it was a failure or error on the developers part, when the reality is it was really a quite brilliant narrative element that was all about enforcing the games atmosphere and player manipulation. The player rot 'mechanic' is similar to the "would you kindly" mechanic in Bioshock, which is all about the idea of breaking 4th wall and manipulating the actual player at the console...
PS: Tidemoo- I realize I'm writing this to you, and that my comment is a little bit strong worded, but I want you to know I'm not meaning to direct my dissapointment about this issue at you, and much more at the media and how they originally spoiled this.
@pasullica: Actually, it's technically correct. The game is both Open World and absolutely an Adventure game. I'm guessing you are saying thinking it's not Open World because it doesn't have an "over world map" feature. Of course, having a map isn't what makes a game Open World, traditionally the term open world is given to games that are non-linear and let the player travel freely through the game world with few restrictions. The meaning of open world is definitely starting to blur a bit with modern gaming- well, the reality is game genre's in general are becoming less and less defined as technology evolves. There are a couple recent games that have come out lately that are open world, but feel more like linear/sequential level games, like Hellblade and even Tomb Raider. You can explore all the way back to the beginning of Hellblade, and you can also choose any order to open the doors in Hellblades Hub "room." Tomb Raider has a strong linear narrative, but once you've opened / passed an area in its game world you can freely travel back to it, via the camp fires (very similar to Dark Souls which is also considered Open world).
The truth is, the popularization of the idea of having "choice" and freedom over narrative in games, is making the majority of games technically more or less open world, even if they aren't referred to as such.
TL;DR Genre's in modern gaming are hard to strictly define, and you would be hard pressed to find a modern game that doesn't fit into 5 or 30 different genres.
@mdinger: Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're my absolute hero of the day. I can't stand the auto-playing videos on GameSpot, in fact, I'm pretty sure that this feature is universally hated by just about all users on gamespot. People were pretty vocal about their distaste for this, but gamespot pretty much told us "tough luck." I've gotten use to just looking at the site with no sound, or getting use to immediately stopping the videos.
Gamespot had some excuse for the autoplay videos, but the reality is they do it to maximize revenue from Advertisements.
@Fallenlords69: This was a timed exclusive from the start, and Ninja Theory was always open about this. It was a smart move on their part too because as an indie studio with 20 dev total for Hellblade, this allowed them to release the game to market much faster since they only needed to do one platform first. if they were to release on all 3 platforms simultaneously the game would of taken much longer to come to market. Of course, as a smaller studio, there is less media space for their press releases, so you can't be blamed for missing the information unless you had a specific interest in the project development.
