@520252 Also...in both Dark Souls and TDU, while having friends to play with could make them more fun, both integrated-multiplayer experiences were still fantastic for people who don't have the time or inclination to maintain and active list of gamer friends.
@KelboDelta Good point. But at least my main concern is addressed. On 360, anyone who wants to play online just uses the only Gold profile, but with X1 and Kinect2 the ability to do that could be screwed up. I'm glad that's not the case, because I'm leaning X1 and if Kinect locked out family members from sharing Gold that would be a deal breaker.
@520252 This is why I tend to fall in love with the rare game that seamlessly integrates multiplayer with a massive and immersive single-player world. You get exactly what you are talking about, along with the increased depth and intensity of less exploitable competition.
The two best examples I can think of would be Dark Souls and Test Drive Unlimited. They both did it in completely different ways with Dark Souls focusing on small one to four player interactions that preserve the story driven world and TDU going for full on massively multiplayer interaction right inside the single player world.
@wgerardi @experience_fadeBefore exp_fade wrote his blog there was this other article somewhere else about multiplayer. The take was different than his but that doesn't change the fact that he totally jacked that idea.
Anyway, I do hope exp_fade prevails in court and there can never be another article anywhere about multiplayer without payment of royalties to whoever wrote the first article about Doom multiplayer.
@Adenosine They make money by costing next to nothing to produce.
I won't buy it because I know it'd just be another one of those games I bought on sale but won't ever actually play, but I have some vague memory of a open world Cabela's game on PS2 that was actually pretty fun.
Of course, back then, "pretty fun" was enough to interest me. It takes a lot more than that these days.
I think Sony just has a fast reaction time, for a mega-corp. They wait for MS to lead with some bit of info, see a negative reaction, and then they one up on that feature. I get the feeling Sony policies aren't really set in stone yet. I think this is marketing genius.
I'm undecided on which console I'll buy, because marketing genius isn't a purchase factor for me, but it is pretty impressive how extensively Sony has shamed MS in the messaging department.
@xolivierx @NoahRoalson @plaintomato Rainbow 6 died a long time ago. The final nail was when it forgot it was Rainbow 6 and decided it was COD.
R6 should have been great, but I don't think it really COULD have been great because it was being made by bean counters for bean counters, not R6 fans.
Modern Warfare had the biggest impact on this generation of games...for better or for worse. Skyrim/Fallout, Far Cry 3, GTA IV, MGS4 and Super Mario Galaxy are all sequels to last gen games that really didn't do anything new even if they did do everything better.
It has to be Portal 2 out of the games listed imo. And Dark Souls (or Demon's) should be on the list as well.
