I think people are being ridiculous. A game, in its inherent nature is meant to be something where a person can play-the story is the icing on the cake
Take Mount and Blade for example. A GREAT GAME. In its depths, there lies a wonderful experience further enhanced by mods.
Another example are games like Dwarf Fortress, Sim City, etc, where you use your IMAGINATION
These are just examples, not the main idea. Besides, people say that Battlefield 1942, Rome Total War are excellent games (no doubt that they are), but their "story" is purely a page out of history
These days, people have come to expect one. In the days of Pong, Tetris, maybe even Donkey Kong (minimal story), people were satisfied
In a game, above all, gameplay is the most important thing, and these days, people don't realise that a game i something you play, not watch
Oh, by the way, if you're about to say graphics, they're better in the REAL world!
