[QUOTE="boyinfridge"]I have a question then. I have a 50" panny and if I set my dvd player to 480 I get a blurrier ( I know its not a word but it works.) picture than if I set it to upscale to 1080P? same goes for my 360 games, to be honest I don't truly understand how scalling works but I know it makes a difference.cspiffo

I'll just say that everyone here is a little right and a little wrong. The TV will upconvert the signal but most televisions have very simple upscaler while many higher end upcon. DVD players have very sophisticated scalers. Upconversion involves taking a lower res image and actually adding missing information into the image that would normally not be their it does this through special algorithms. The better the algorithm and processing chip the better the image. I won't go into details but DVD upcon. is not a joke. It's actually very usefull. There is also one other thing that many of you don't consider. Think about the source for a second. DVD is an all digital medium that came out in the analog television era. many DVD players of that era were designed to to process a digital signal and stream an analog signal to the TV. Now we live in the era of Digital Televisions. Now you can stream an all digital connection from your DVD player through HDMI to an HDTV. Don't you think that makes a huge difference?

your pretty much right with what you said cspiffo, but tv's are receiver's in other words if your watching over the air standard broadcast the picture wont be as good as the same channel in hd. because the hd channels for satalite and digital cable broadcast are at their highest ratio 1080i(1080p is too expansive to film).

I think this were people make their mistake when they buy tv's they think because their t.v. is 1080p or 720p that everything will be at that resolution. but this is not so, the source going to the tv must be 1080p or 1080i etc for the tv to project that resolution.

this is the whole reason for ps3 and xbox 360 because the previous generation had a max resolution of 480p, but like you said since dvd players are fully digital they can upconvert the signal with hdmi and your right it does make a huge difference, specifically when compared to dvd players using component, s-video or composite cables, because those three cables cant go to 1080p,1080i or 720p

yeah it is an underrated system for sure I got one last year and Im impressed with it the games for it are great.

there is one problem I have with it though and that is the platinum gamecube(which is the one I own) cant use component cables, which sucks for me, because Im playing it on a big screen so it is a little fuzzy with the composite cables, Im looking into buying s-video cables for it, but still.

DVD upconverters dont actually upconvert the image to 1080p. Thats your answer. That whole upconversion thing is a gimmick used by the DVD market to prevent as many blu-ray and HD-dvd sales as possible. That is why you are able to set it to "1080p". If you could magically keep your dvd's and play them in 1080p, blu-rays would be worthless.freesafety13

first off hd-dvd no longer exists in the market in terms of players and movies. second sony makes upconvert dvd players so why would they want to prevent selling they're own creation(blu ray)?

the reason this persons dvd player still plays at the 1080p selection even though he has a 720p tv is because dvd upconvert players have a sensor that can detect the the next best signal if you don't have 1080p. it is written in the instructions.

to prove my point I have a 1080p tv with an upconvert dvd player and digital cable. when I first hooked everything up, my tv detected the upconvert dvd player at 1080p and the digital cable at 1080i both of which I use an hdmi cable with. and if I hook up my ps2 with component cables the tv detects it at 480p.

also when I downgrade the image from 1080p to 1080i or 720p on the dvd player you can see a big diffrence. so there is nothing magical or gimmicky about it.

ya I have never played it either, I keep picking it up to buy it but I always put it backdown and get something else

probably because the people in the store tell me how great it is which gives me pause and doubt

I have had both but I have had the slim longer, they are about the same you can attach a hard drive to the old one but you will have a hard time finding the equipment.

the slim works great I prefer it, but it all depends on how much you want to spend. I would suggest you buy a new slim model that way you have the piece of mind it will last for awhile.

but if $130 bucks is more then you are willing to spend then it wont hurt for you to buy the fat model since it is cheaper.
