Russia was never a "friend", it was stupid of Americans to ever think so. Russia is still pissed about the fall of the Soviet Union and the west constantly trying to box them in. Really, if the shoe were on the other foot and the US had crumbled after the cold war, and the USSR had turned Canada, Alaska and Puerto Rico into Soviet allied states, would Americans think Russia was a friend? Probably not. So I don't know why we are surprised that Russia still acts aggressively towards us and it's break away neighbors.
