The other problem I have with the hardcore argument,and this goes back to my biker/motorcycle owner analogy,is that casuals are not a curse. I totally disagree with stike on this one. If only hardcore gamers bought games the industry would wither. Yes,MGS4,Halo,GTA4 sell but thats because everyone buys them,hardcore and casual. If you look at most highly rated games,but the ones only hardcore gamers play,the sales numbers are abysml.

And I do not blame nintendo,they got creamed in the last generation. Yes,skewed number showed that "they sold as many gamecubes as XBOX's"but not only are those numbers subjective,but microsoft was on the rise in their first entry,and the xbox would have kept selling except that microsoft abandoned it with the 360. Whereas nintendo was losing customer base and the gamecube was dead in the water long before the wii. So like it or not,cooking mama,and "wave your hands in the air like you just dont care" shovelware allows the few gems like mario,and metroid to continue on. I would really hate to see nintendo have to go down the same road as sega.

And when it comes to that other big argument,it might be the wii and casuals that finally legitamize gaming. As long as the face of gaming is the hardcores,no one who does not play will respect it,and the politicians pretend we do not exsist,and that its only kids playing. Obama has a wii right? What if more washington wives start using wii fit,or lobbyists have elderly parent keeping in shape in the nursing homes thanks to wii sports. Like it or not,casual gaming and gamers have more potential to legitamize the hobby in a few years than ever came from decades of arguments from the "hardcore"gaming population.

u know what i like your point. just because its not "hardcore" doesnt mean it cannot shape the industry, hell wii fit is selling like hot cakes and can rarely be seen in stores and has sold nearly 25million already (thats more than any other non-pack in game,like wii sports) and that number is up there with the all-time sales. as gamers maybe we should untine and give every game a shot even shovelware and not be sooo cruel to ppl who may not be "hardcore gamers" but hey that will most likely never happen again like it did back in say the late 90s(N64,PSone) when "fanboys" werent exactly as popular as they are current day.

[QUOTE="reviewninja"][QUOTE="stike22"]To tell the truth most gamers that say the Wii is for kids aren't hardcores, they only think they are because they played a game on X360 once and won and then they get beat at a Wii game and they blame the graphics and call it a kids game or something...its pathetic really, its only a game.stike22
u said it perfectly. u my friend are a true gamer imo.

Lol...thanx and I can see by your game rating that you are too.

thanks man i like to give every game a try as long as its not shovelware.

Hardcore gamers are the true gamers, but there are different types of Hardcore gamers...Nintendo for instance hardcore Nintendo gamers buy the Nintendo games such as Metroid, Mario, Starfox and such and complete them all. long time fans of Nintendo's games, you don't actually have to complete them all but have to get far and have at least played them...some Hardcores also judge each other by how much they complete the game like if they clocked it fully 100%. Hardcore gamers don't have to be serious or anything, they can just enjoy a game but they always expect better from games, like I have completed all Mario games, but I found Mario Galaxy one of the easiest to complete, so for me as a hardcore Nintendo and Mario gamer that is a mark down for Mario Galaxy...I mean Mario Galaxy is a great game, but not as great as previous titles. I judge myself as a hardcore simply because I have played games since I was like 2yrs old, I have had all consoles at least once in my life, I still have and play those consoles even now. I once counted all my Gameboy and Gameboy advance games, I had over 350.....I now only have around 50...I don't know what happened to them. And well throught my life I have had roughly 1000games at least, right now I have over 100PC games, over 100PS2 games, and I can't be bothered to count the rest. And well I have completed around 950 of those 1000games. Lost a lot of my games throughout the years, but well I still remember most of them. As I said before the old games always seem better then the new ones to me because I always compare them to each other and the New ones are always lack something or they are always to short and linear. It really isn't that hard to be a hardcore all you have to do is love a game and know a lot about it and judge which is the best one from all you played...thats pretty much it...oh and of course you actually have to complete the game. And well simply put hardcore Nintendo gamers don't buy a Nintendo console for crap games they buy them for Nintendo's games...however there are exceptions, so long as it is a game like Red Steel or No more heroes and not a minigame or kids game or educational game and such, you can be a hardcore at it...simple.stike22
i agree, new games are shorter and a bit more linear than past games but hey it sells so thats all developers care about.

[QUOTE="zarshack"]i used to think i was hardcore when i played WoW for over 15 hours a day for months on end. wouldnt say competition HAS to be assumed with being hardcore but that just seems to be a general consensus.mattykovax
I dont think it has to be though. I do not play much multiplayer,maybe fighting games or I used to play the occasional friendly game on XBL with friends i made on gamespot,but I really only like single player. I have been playing since atari 2600,have owned most major consoles,have played,beat,mastered countless games since I started in every generation.I have no other hobbies,in fact i ma playing through my xbox backlog right now,and have Fallout:brotherhood of steel(crappy game BTW,but I will play it through regardless) paused right now so I can post this. But I only care for non-competitive single player experiences,and when I do play with someone else only for co-op. So does this mean I ma not a hardcore Gamer because I have no elements of competition to my game?

i can appreciate a gamer like u mattykovax, you care for the single-player modes in games thats rare now-a-days but i find it pretty cool. and the fact that uve been playing since the 2600 days and have owned most systems and play videogames consistently alone makes u a hardcore gamer in my books.

[QUOTE="Gammit10"]

I think "hardcore" gamer (and any other type) is pretty arbitray, blown-out-of-propotion, and useless. If I ever described myself as a "hardcore gamer" I would be deeply embarassed.

What's wrong with saying "I enjoy playing video games?" We all play games and post on message boards, so we're all nerds. Do we really need to differentiate our nerdum?

ur point is very interesting. i think i like that! lets not differentiate the nerds that we are we all play videogames no need to seperate. i like ur point gammit10.

The playstation 3 doesn`t have "one mascot" thats another good thing about the ps3, MS doesn`t have a great selection of mascots, besides Master chief, because the xbox shares a lotta big titles with the PC, Mascots like marcus fenix can be counted as PC mascots. But the playstation has much more, nathan drake, ratchet, nathan hale, kratos, sackboy, Helghast, ISA etc..CQuark
u are right. i like ur point PS3 can have multiple mascots which makes sony a very diverse console and has games for everyone n touches all genres pretty much, so its a good luxury to have. i guess Microsoft has master chief but he isnt for "everyone" n his alternative is Fenix i guess or it could be the guy from crackdown(also another guy who totes a gun), but im getting off topic lol
