I am running Witcher 3 at an old Geforce 670 and I7 2600k. It runs pretty well and with good graphics.


It´s important to remember that while the PC hardware is more expensive, games are CHEAPER.

That´s because the PC hardware is not really more expensive. It´s just that console makers SUBSIDIZE the console cost. Consoles mostly are sold cheaper than they cost.

In return, the console maker gets a % of every game sold on console. And that means games cost more.

I may be wrong but I would even say that doing games in this resolution is more difficult than doing 2D games in higher resolutions. The very low resolutions are counter intuitive to graphics designers and the placement of pixels must be very precise for you to see what they need you to see. One pixel to the right or to the left may turn an eye into an ear.

In old times, such talent was necessary due to the constraints of media storage and hardware. I mean... take an artist to draw those screens above in 1024x769 with 16 bit color. He will get a drawing tablet and do it in some painting program. But each screen will be at least some 200kb in JPEG. In a time before JPEG compression and of 1.4 megabytes disks, each screen would occupy more space AND you would end up needing absurd 15 or more disks for a game! Prohibitive...

In 8 bits, it was even worse... many games would come in 16kb cartridges... 64kb at most... 128kb needed special expensive cartridges... and anyway, the hardware did not allow anything greater than 320x200


so there was a reason for this resolution.


Nowadays, as I said, it's counterintuitive for artists. They do that at great work for a visual style that satisfy hipsters.

It´s MORE work for less quality. Incredible.

@gregyeah3: I agree, this goes in the same direction as my comments. I grew up with an MSX-8 bits computer (MSX was the computer where Metal Gear was born, as well as several other Konami and Compile titles)

Then Sega Genesis then moved to the PC, back in the time of Warcraft 1, Dune, XCOM, Master of Orion.

Those were all pixelated games because of videocards constraints back in the time, as well as media storage constraints.

What an advance was to move from 320x200 to 640x480 (SVGA). Wow, Jazz Jackrabbit looked fantastic with those hi-res graphocs (640x480 or even incredible 800x600!)

And now for some reason we went back to 320x200????

I much prefer 2D graphics over bad 3D graphics. But no reason for them to pixelated as in 320x200 pixels.
