What makes "politics" in games any different than a love story? Or anything about a character? If an article was written about Cloud's love for Aerith, would you say "why is this here?" Or what about something like Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza 7 overcoming his hardships? We should just ignore narratives in games?

They're all analogues to real life (save some more fantastical examples). We talk about narratives in games BECAUSE they are relatable (or not, if we strive for that fantasy angle). I see it as all or nothing - there's no point in cherrypicking what topics that already exist in games are worth discussing. Everything is fair game, or nothing is.

wow, ty for the info...I have cousins and some online friends in Seattle. Cousins are pretty right-leaning, online friends are very left-leaning. I'll have to ask for details on what they think lol. My cousins I only see on social media and they just post memes. My online friends have only mentioned the weather and depression as concerns, maybe b/c they're so left, they don't mind the junkies and no cops lol.

@dominicwow: When a game resembles or is analogous to the real world or potential future real world, how is that not worth talking about? Do you not like stories, characters, etc in your games?
