The main deals of deadline day was obviously Torres to Chelsea and Carroll to Liverpool, both we knew were really going to happen anyway so no really big surprise. Both of the transfers broke records due to their fees of course, which either showed the footballing world was going mad at that moment in time or the recession is still quite bad, either of these I'm not totally sure about.
Anyway firstly Torres, he moves to Chelsea for £50 million, be it over priced or whatever, then makes out that he is glad to be at a "big club". Which really did ruffle my feathers but I won't rant about here. He has moved to a team with an ageing squad and little back up on the bench. Some say that he was not Ancellotti's purchase but one of the owner due to the recent lack of money being pumped into the football club, which might have an effect on his place in the team if its true. At Chelsea Torres might (and i say might, doesn't mean I'm right) not be the figurehead of the team, the player in which the whole team is constructed around, unlike at Liverpool. Chelsea I'm sure will want to keep playing their own style of football with their own tactical formation and then try to fit Torres into a strikers role whether it be with Drogba or with Anelka. I think more Drogba will suit Torres as Anelka and Torres a abit alike as they are both pacey, good finishers and will sit on the shoulder on the defender. Where as Drogba will try to hold and battle for the ball in the air a lot better then Torres can perform. However the Chelsea midfield of Lampard, Ramires and Essien will be able to play balls through as well as link up with the spaniard just like Gerrard and Torres at Liverpool. If Torres if just fitted into a system and put out on the right of an attacking three then he will not be much of a threat at all and will probably start to move infield whenever possible. Hopefully this will happen on Sunday when Liverpool play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Another worry Chelsea have is that Torres seems to be struck down with injury quite frequently over the past couple of seasons which has seen his form dip and dive for Liverpool, which made him play badly at times, so they need to look after him until his injury days are fully behind him or just toughen him up a little. As well as injuries Torres seems to suffer from sulking a little bit too when things aren't going his way, so they might have to sort that little thing out too, but apart from that they should be fine.
The second biggest deal of the day was Andy Carroll's move to Liverpool for a small fee of £35 million, which again might seem a lot but shows a couple of things. It shows that the owners do seem committed to the club by spending the cash on much needed players. A financial backing that is much needed to rebuild a depleted Liverpool squad. This leading on to the owners hopefully being serious about backing the plans for a new stadium and hopefully will put their own money towards it as well, anyway back to Carroll. Liverpool's old formation of playing Gerrard just behind the striker (Torres) probably won't work now due to neither Carroll and Suarez having the pace which Torres has, so the formation might need a little tweaking whether it be go back to 4-4-2 or find another system that will vacate both of the new arrivals. The combination of Suarez and Carroll will hopefully be a bright one as it brings back memories of Toshack and Keegan, little n' large. They both have good quality on the ground as well as Carroll being good in an aerial battle against defenders, so he can knock balls down to Suarez who will then put them away. However if Liverpool do go 4-4-2 it will mean a pile up in midfield between Gerrard, Lucas and Meireles. Of course, we need to play our captain in that mix but who would play beside him? Personally I would put Meireles there as he has started to show his quality and has shown that he can run a game from the centre of midfield, where as Lucas is much better at getting forward a bit like Gerrard. On the wings I would put Kuyt and Maxi Rodrigues until we can find some decent much needed wingers in the Summer, or we could play Johnson on the right wing as he cannot do much defending yet is excellent at going forwards, then play Kelly at right back. At left back Aurelio should play every game he can with Rodrigues in front of him, then Agger and Skrtel/Carragher centre backs. That hopefully being the match winning team for the rest of the season as soon as Carroll gets fit and Suarez gets his work permit (still hasn't got yet). There doesn't seem to be a spot for Joe Cole who again is a class player but hasn't really turned it on for Liverpool during the time which he has being here. Cole i think being better behind the striker aslong as he is given freedom to do whatever he wants to do, free spirit if you like. Anyway I think Carroll and Suarez will play quite well together so hopefully scoring Liverpool a lot of goals in the future.
