@kheirank: Large scale MMOs take 5-7 years of development time, during most of which consumers aren't even aware the game exists yet. As others mentioned, Star Citizen is only at 3 1/2 years of dev time, with one of those years consisting primarily of hiring people(they only had 10 people) and finding office space.
Games don't just poof into existence, they take a massive amount of work. And deliverables are very sparse until the last 15% of dev time.
@dyshonest: It's NOT slow. That's the whole point. You perceive it to be slow because you knew about it since day one. Most large MMOs take 5-7 years. Some take even longer. Claiming that Star Citizen's development is "slow" is painfully ignorant.
@DrizztDark: Games get cancelled because of Publishers choosing to stop funding. CIG doesn't have a Publisher. They've stated that even if all the money dried up, they have investors ready to throw money at the project. So money is not an issue. They also have officially stated in a letter named "The Pledge" that they wrote and have hosted on their site. Here is the first paragraph:
"We, the Star Citizen team at Cloud Imperium, hereby promise to deliver the game you expect. You, the tens of thousands of pledgers, have allowed us to cut out the big publisher and build the game on our terms. To let us focus on quality free of the pressure to deliver by a certain financial quarter. To nurture a new original IP. To put fun ahead of shareholder profits"
