Because they're more likely to launch first, and this worked well for Xbox 360 after its 2005 launch, it outsold PS3 (starting in late 2006) for a number of years. PS3 only caught up to 360 around 2011 or so.

Also, because R&D on the next platform usually begins right after a new console launches, and no later than a 2 years after. The current systems have been on the market for more than 2 years now.

Phil Spencer said a couple of times now, he fully expects there to be another console.

PS4 has outsold Xbox One 2:1 worldwide.

What I'm saying is, it should be assumed that Microsoft (and Sony) have started R&D on their next gen consoles. Neither of them would be coming out "soon" but internally, both Microsoft & Sony are almost certainly having discussions on when they will come out, what features they'll have, and the overall direction of the next console cycle.

I thought you were implying the sales of the XB1 were bad and they should abandon ship. The sales aren't bad at all. Sony is just killing it.

Yeah, I wasn't implying that. XB1 sales are quite good, but PS4 sales are something else.

@scrollinglayers: no later than holiday '18. Might get Xbox Two announcement at E3 this year.

I highly doubt there will be any announcement of the next gen Xbox this year, or 2017. If it was to come in 2018, then we'll hear about it early that year. Just as both PS4 and Xbox One were announced the same year they were released. I think 2018 is too early given the delays we've had with almost every AAA game this gen.

2019 would strike the right balance between not launching too early and not stretching this gen out too long.

Soon, Microsoft will have to start internally considering a time frame for when they'll launch the next generation Xbox.

They'll probably be thinking about Q4 2019 and they'll assume that Sony won't launch PS5 until 2020.

You realize that PS3 couldn't even run on the power that Wii U uses? That is the point. Wii U uses half the power that the super slim uses. Wii U uses little more power than a PS2 and has some very impressive games. No matter how you paint it, Wii U does great things while using little power and puts it all in a neat little package.

Yes its power efficient as it should be considering it came out 7 yrs after the 360 while only offering about 1.5x more horsepower. The PS4 offers better performance per watt than the Wii U. Wii U = 33 watts TDP with around 300 Gflops raw floating point performance. PS4 (Revised Motherboard) = 115 watts TDP with performance of 1.84 Tflops

PS4 is around 6x more capable than the Wii U while consuming only around 3.5x more watts.

For somebody whose favorite gaming company is Nintendo you sure try hard to make them look bad.

1.84 tf / 5 = 368 gigaflops vs. Wii U's 352. 5.2x stronger, yeah that's around 6x. And you use the revised Ps4 against the launch Wii U, first off you should compare the launch Ps4 and second Nintendo improves their consoles as well, Wii got 2 die shrinks but Nintendo doesn't report that stuff and wasn't found out until later. Wii U's today could very well be more efficient.

And no, no Ps3 game can match Wii U's best. The difference in hardware is so obvious that Criterion implemented the PC version's high res textures for need for speed U in 10 minutes with no performance hit. The memory gap is just that big, forget about the DX 10 gpu. That game almost looks next gen at night, a launch window 3rd party title. Wii U games, pretty consistently have higher res textures, better lighting and higher frame rates than 360 and Ps3 games.

Nintendo is your favorite gaming company like Monsanto is my favorite produce company.

I don't believe for 1 second that Wii U is 368 gigaflops. The GPU is just 176 gigaflops and no way does that weak CPU make up the difference. The main strengths of Wii U is the DX10-class / shader model 4.1 GPU feature set with better efficiency and the larger amount of RAM.

Not a much higher performance GPU over 360/PS3, which does not exist in Nintendo's console.

I think the most likely way that the [home console] NX could be 2X more powerful than PS4 is if Nintendo implements the supplemental computing device with its own processor/gpu/apu (from the patent) that works in conjunction with the main console.

It seems pretty clear, all indications are pointing to the NX handheld coming out this year and the NX home console in 2017.

This is interesting:

For those of you hungry for some leaks, there's a guy on reddit who claims he has access to the NX's operating system. He says he's part of a group contracted by Nintendo to find exploits in the OS to run unsigned code (homebrew).

According to him, the OS build for NX compiles for ARM, and there's another build which compiles for PowerPC (likely for a Wii U OS update). There's also drivers for Google Fi, which he says lends credibility for a portable device. It also makes heavy use of Material Design in the OS.

Of course, this is the internet and you'd be a fool to not take this information with a grain of salt. But judging from his post history, he seems like he knows what he's talking about. It's certainly believable enough, and reads like it's relevant developer information as opposed to wild fan speculation. Take it or leave it, I guess.

Based on the NeoGAF comments, it sounds quite believable and likely not from some fanboy.

http://blogs.barrons.com/asiastocks/2016/01/05/nintendo-slips-nx-to-eat-into-3ds-wii-u-nomura-cuts-target/?mod=yahoobarrons&ru=yahoo

Nintendo slipped 5% in Tokyo after Nomura Securities said the mysterious new console NX, to be unveiled this June, will cannibalize the existing sales of 3DS and Wii U.

According to analyst Junko Yamamura, Nintendo will make NX available by 2016 year-end’s shopping season. Nomura expects Nintendo to announce the “concept” sometime between March and May, unveil the actual console in June, and launch it between October and November. “We think the NX will start to boost operating profits in 18/3, when it will have been on the market for a full year and will have a line-up of software titles, which carry high operating margins.”

I'd love to be at top level Microsoft meetings right now.

"Should we work toward a next generation Xbox launch in 2018 ?"

"Should we take more time, think about 2019 or 2020?"

:"Maybe we should put Xbox totally in the cloud!"

"You Fools! We have to get J. Allard back to spearhead our next Xbox!"
